Reviews - Donnington Valley Hotel Golf and Spa

4AA Assessed Hotel Ratings explained
Oxford Road Donnington, Newbury, RG14 3AG
A country retreat situated in the very heart of the Berkshire countryside just outside Newbury, one hour from central London and 45 minutes from Heathrow airport. A hotel that likes to think of itself as 4 star plus, as it goes beyond the expectations of a traditional 4 star hotel to the surprise and delight of guests. The stunning grounds and parkland golf course that surround the hotel provide the perfect setting for a spa or golf break.

All of the air-conditioned bedrooms and suites have been elegantly designed to include Egyptian cotton duvets, marble bathrooms, Wi-Fi internet access, laptop-sized safes and complimentary bottled water. The executive rooms and suites also have a mini fridge with fresh milk. All offer uncompromising quality with peaceful views over golfing fairways and rolling Berkshire countryside.

The award winning restaurant, The WinePress is intimate, yet with an informal atmosphere it brings together fine food and wine in a relaxed and contemporary dinning room. Fresh local ingredients are paired with wines from a cellar with over 300 bins and 30 of these by the glass! Careful attention has been made to the lighting and music in the restaurant to ensure that it reflects the time and mood of the evening.

The Donnington Valley Health Club and Spa is one of the top rated spas in the country with luxurious facilities including an 18m swimming pool, sauna, steam and aromatherapy rooms plus a state of the art gym and dance studio. The 7 treatment rooms pamper to every spa lover's needs with relaxation areas and a menu of therapies with something for all. The hotel is also perfectly equipped for meetings, away days and training seminars as well as conferences; ideal if you are looking for something extra special that will leave a lasting impression on your clients.

The Golf Course was re-designed and lengthened in 2000. It is set in beautiful rolling countryside, and is now a challenging 6353 yards, 18 hole, par 71 from the back tees. Although some of the holes are quite forgiving the closing four holes are regarded as one of the toughest finishes in the country, with water featuring prominently on 15th, 16th and 17th holes.

Hotel does not have ambience. The bar staff were pleasant but not well trained. Dining experience very good, food was excellent. Think hotel may need refurb and brightening up somehow. Not a holiday destination more a business/conference venue.

Terrible hotel not value for money more like a 1*
I booked this place for my husbands 30th birthday and the first break for our 6 month daughter. before I booked I called to ask if children can use the pool facilities and what times they can use them. Upon reach we checked in and once we got to the pool my 6 month daughter was
Not allowed in the pool as it is only open till 5 for children. The duty manager was extremely unhelpful when I complained I was not told this information on the phone. Also the pool reopened for children at 10am and checkout is at 11am.
I also found the £5 room service charge rediculous how can carrying a try cost that much just for 1 drink. The food in the restaurant was pub food and we were charged over a hundred pounds for this.
I had been recommended this spa by a family member but I got nothing but disappointment from this place and it ruined what I had planned for my husbands birthday. Very unhappy with the service and bad management in this place would definetely not recommend this place to anyone.

Lovely Anniversary weekender!
We popped away for a weekend together, wanting a hotel near Oxford, with a pool and sauna. The Donnington fitted the bill and had the availability.
We liked our swim and sauna, these areas were nicely kept and clean. The facilities, hair dryers and costume dryers were good also.
The bedroom was tidy and very comfortable and clean. The bed was big and comfortable, linen was clean and fresh. The bathroom was clean and nicely presented, but if you were nitpicking, there were signs of wear and tear evident in the fittings.
Food wise we just had the buffet breakfast, which generally was fine, most of the usual food was available. I did have BBQ sauce put on my food instead of the Brown requested (without apology) but that was scraped off my egg and replaced with the Brown requested!
Overall our stay was fine we had a nice time .

Clean and comfortable
An overnight stay to attend a local wedding, we had a clean comfortable well presented room, would have been nice to stay longer to sample the spa.

Good enough but...
Service at bar and restaurant particularly good. Room cleanliness marred by too many ants getting in. Quality of room marred by view only of grass banking. Food was good but portions were a bit small. It was good value for money but only at the prices that Late Rooms charges. Signing out experience was spoiled by having to rectify the bill where they wanted to charge us for two breakfasts which we never had booked in for. Given the modern electronic ways of booking, I'm surprised and perturbed that their system charged for something that we had never asked for in the first place. Are they hoping people just won't look at their bill?
