About the hotel
The George Hotel is believed to be the oldest existing building in Reading, dating back to at least as far as 1423. It was one of the major coaching inns between London and the West Country in the 18th century, and it still retains many of its wonderful:original Coaching Inn features, including Tudor Archways and a very attractive Cobbled stone courtyard. The main entrance from King Street still contains some of the original timbers, and 18th and 19th century facades overlook the courtyard.

Good Budget Hotel
3rd time I've used the George in the last year, basic but clean and tidy, staff always efficient will use again
Poor value / dreadful customer service
The actual experience was moderately disappointing - OK, I don't expect that an ancient Listed building will have air-con but the hotel made no attempt to cool down public areas.
Checking in quite early I was able to secure a fan but I know others did not. The room was poorly laid out, with a safe so low that I had to lay on the floor to operate it, no electrical outlets near the bed, Tea / coffee facilities on a tray in a cabinet that I had to clear desk space to remove and use. The staff on the front desk were great, friendly and helpful. Breakfast in a sweltering room was so-so, watery orange juice, vinegary poached eggs. My real problem is with the bed - a 2'6" single - and with the fact that the General Manager of the hotel responded to my comments on another review site that this was absurd with "in connection with your accommodation experience you confirm you had booked a Single room with a single bed to sleep one person. This is what you reserved and this is what you got and confirm it does state on your reservation form the size of the bed. Nothing Absurd about it" Whether it does state that on the reservation form or not (and I can't find it) I am not interested in being told that my comments are wrong or invalid. Maybe he has never heard the old saying "The customer is always right"
He optimistically "Looks forward to seeing me again" ..... don't hold your breath mate.
