About the hotel
Situated in The Vale of the While Horse, off the A420 between Oxford and Swindon, Uffington is about 8 miles north of the M4 through Lambourne, of race-horse fame. The nearest Market Towns are Faringdon and Wantage, each about 15 minutes' drive. Shrivenham Defence Academy is just 3 miles away at the Watchfield roundabout on the A420.
The Village has a 13th Century Church, shop and Post Office, and several literary connections. It was the early home of Thomas Hughes, whose renowned book "Tom Brown's Schooldays" begins in the old school here. It is now an interesting little museum. John Betjeman lived here in the 1930's and 40's, during which time he wrote many famous works. Tolkein, while based in Oxford, visited this area, and it is said much of his inspiration for Middle Earth came from the Ridgeway nearby. An ideal base for walking, cycling, horse-riding, angling, visiting historic properties, golfing, or just chilling out at any time of the year. Warm welcome, caring staff, log fire, high standards, excellent food and selection of fine beverages, including Real Ales. Well-behaved dogs welcome.

Top Room lovely landlord
Arrived and booked in and was told the chef was off this evening however they booked us in to a pub down the road for dinner, gave us a lift there and collected us afterwards.
Couldn't have been more helpful. Had a couple or 5 pints in the bar when we returned and a very comfy nights sleep. The only thing that let it down was the breakfast was a bit sparse and not worth a tenner each however as the chef had let him down again this may have had something to do with it. Overall I would stay here again as it was so friendly quiet and comfy.
Many thanks for all your kind comments. Yes, you were here when a major crisis happened. Our long standing and much appreciated Head Chef was diagnosed with a serious illness and has had to resign, though we are still in touch with him and his family. It has thrown our privately owned and run Pub and all our services off the rails. We have been getting by with Agency Chefs (some much better than others!).
The Good News is that, like busses, two good’uns have come along at once. Within the next few days we expect to take a new Chef on a month’s trial – after which we will do some publicity. In the meanwhile, customers can still get a decent meal here, we do have other qualified staff who are still providing good, home-made grub, but we are looking for the special flair and input that a qualified and experienced Head Chef can offer.
So, I hope you will come back to The Fox & Hounds soon – it will always be a very rural retreat, but we are applying for Planning Permission for two more B&B Rooms and a Garden Room extension to the Bar.

Overall an excellent place to stay,we were welcomed and felt very comfortable.our room was clean and well presented the only downside was no internet in the room.the food was hot and ample proportions and very nice.
Many thanks for your kind comments. There IS wifi in our B&B rooms, but for legal reasons residents must sign a document to protect us from prosecution in cases of misuse. This information is in the folder in the B&B rooms. A legal form (of 3 pages!) must be signed, then Bar Staff will give Residents today’s password to access our Internet in the privacy of their room. We are sorry this was not made clear to you, and that you did not see the Guest Information Folder, but had you asked any staff member on duty when you were here they would have been able to get you connected.
