A B& B with so much potential but hampered by apathy and filth
We arrived tired and late on Thursday evening.
I was asked whether the room was ok and I replied, 'Well it is ok and no more!' The room was named 'Wheat'. On closer examination and in the stark light of the next morning, I wish that I had said more the previous evening. I lifted the sheepskin rug in the room to discover a large cream stain on a dark carpet. The rug was therefore placed there to mask the stain (vomit?). There were no cups in the room for us to make a cup of tea. There was no hot water in the taps. The shower was filthy and the layers of dirt between the pipes and the toilet made me shudder. The only window to the room could not be opened fully because it was blocked by the bins and a tank. The light above the mirror was broken and the pull string for the lights was just that... with knot in it. The bin in the bathroom was metal and had stains down the front of it and was broken so that you had to use toilet paper to lift it for fear of touching whatever was on it.
Then came breakfast. We are vegetarian and Tonge Barn had been informed of this weeks before. We were presented with a meagre breakfast- half a tomato, one mushroom, a small spoonful of beans (which were off and tasted of vinegar), two eggs and one slice of toast. There was a large space on the plate where the meat element of the breakfast should have been.
I raised all of these issues with the only member of staff on site- she appeared to have to do everything. She said that she would move us. She showed us a room that she called a spa room. It had a number 2 on the door. It looked more like the photos on the site. She offered to move us. We agreed. When we returned later that day, we had been moved but the same member of staff informed us that it was not possible to move us to room 2 and we would have to have room 1. This led us to believe that room 2 was the 'show room' as it was not occupied at all during our stay.
Room 1- Well.... we had no hot water in 'Wheat' but we couldn't get the lopsided tap in room 1 to offer up any cold water. The light in the bathroom did not work either. The most unusual element of this room is the fact that it has no door to separate the bedroom and the toilet. There is a very unsatisfactory (?dirty) excuse for a string curtain hanging there. The carpets were ill fitting and, as you entered, not fitted at all. But it did have a wardrobe.
We did not bother to raise the issues in bedroom one as we were to vacate Tonge Barn the next day. We didn't want room 2 to be 'dangled' in front of us as to what we could and indeed should have had. Having said that, we did ask for two slices of bread on the second morning and that is exactly what we got. The owner of Tonge Barn really needs to read and react to the dreadful reviews that are being written about his business. He has lost our business and we visit this area regularly. My suggestion is...If you can afford it, visit the property which is at the top of the road.
