We're set back from the main High Street so our rooms guarantee you a quiet night's sleep. Since it’s refurbishment in September 2013 each of the 19 en-suite bedrooms is individually designed with luxury bathrooms, air conditioning, flatscreen digital televisions, tea and coffee making facilities, and a small safe for personal belongings.

Whether visiting the Penny Farthing for business or for pleasure, the high quality finish of the rooms guarantees a warm and comfortable stay. Breakfast is served in our informal breakfast room where a range of hot and cold dishes are available to suit all requirements, from traditional cooked breakfasts prepared by our on-site breakfast chef, to porridge, cereals and continental options. Rather disappointing

The Pennyfarthing is ideally placed to make the most of Berkhamsted but the entrance off the Waitrose car park through a dark corridor is unwelcoming.

The receptionist was friendly and helpful but, for the price charged, we expected rather more polish, and a brighter reception area. The decor is smart but dark, and the room, which we were told was a free upgrade, so presumably the best, was large, very clean, but with a window with a view only onto an adjoining roof. The bed was very comfortable, with sheets and towels of good quality. Breakfast choice was very limited, compared with other hotels we've stayed in and served in an uninteresting, again dark feeling, room. The cooked food was good but the cook had to serve as well and had an offhand manner. If the room charge was £20 or £30 cheaper we would have been satisfied, but expected more for £97.
