Attention to detail needs some attention!

We regularly stay in the Cheltenham / Gloucester area to visit family and chose the Cheltenham Regency Hotel as the cost was reasonable compared to other hotels in the area (including the budget hotels) We arrived quite late (about 10.15pm) and found a note at reception saying please go to the bar.

So we made our way to the bar area where a member of staff went to find another member of staff who took us back to reception to book in. (Would a bell system at reception not be easier?)

The young man booked us in and informed us that breakfast was from 7:30 to 10:30am. Our room was well furnished and comfortable. As we got into bed my husband noticed that the sheet wasn't on properly at the top end of the bed, so he went to adjust it. He then noticed that there were large stains ingrained into the sheet on both sides which looked like footprints. The sheet had obviously been laundered which led us to the conclusion that the stains were so deep-rooted that they wouldn't come out - the sheet shouldn't have been used in our opinion. It was gone 11.30pm by this stage, so we turned the sheet round so the stains were under the mattress at the foot of the bed.

The next morning we went for breakfast at 9:40am only to find the room empty of residents and being cleared by staff. A polite waitress informed us that breakfast finished at 9:30am. We told her that we had been told by the guy who checked us in that it finished at 10:30am, and the chef then appeared to say there was plenty of food left and we then sat down for breakfast. The food was excellent and the restaurant staff helpful despite obviously wanting to get on with tidying. We did feel a little uncomfortable being the only ones in the room with staff cleaning up around us though. We returned to our room and whilst I got things ready for what we needed for the day my husband wrote a note to staff to highlight the small issues we had. This included the wrong information given to us about breakfast time, the stained sheet, plus the fact that despite booking a Superior Double room we appeared to be in a Superior Twin room. Not much difference between the two other than a Superior Double has a king-sized double bed and a safe in the wardrobe. A Superior Twin has no safe and two twin beds joined together. Our room had twin beds and no safe. We would have used the safe, but chose to take our laptop with us instead. The beds were comfortable however, and very spacious. We left the written information with a member of staff at reception and went out for the day. In the evening, upon returning to our room, our key card wouldn't work. We went to reception and the guy who had checked us in the night before looked at the key card and checked the computer. He then said, "I checked you in last night didn't I?" We told him he had. He then said, fairly nonchalantly, "I only checked you in for one night. I'll change it to 3!" Not sure why he didn't book us in for the correct number of nights on arrival, but he didn't seem too bothered. We returned to our room feeling a little bemused. The bed sheet had been changed but there was no acknowledgement of the note we had left for staff that morning. We went for breakfast the next morning (at 9:00am!) There was a bottle of cleaning fluid and a cloth left on one of the tables near us, which seemed a little out of place. Food was once again excellent.

Having spent the day with family, we arrived back that evening to be greeted by two empty glasses and a beer bottle on the reception desk (no staff though!)

A strange stay all-in-all. Lots of small things which I've outlined above which we haven't experienced at other hotels in the area. A couple of members of staff who, whilst polite, didn't really seem as if they wanted to be there - a waitress who liked to give the swinging door from the restaurant to kitchen a bit of a kick before going through; a guy at reception who liked to wear large headphones around his neck whilst working; no acknowledgement of our note to staff about the minor discrepancies.

As the complaints were minor, and we'd informed the hotel by leaving the note, we chose not to speak directly to someone about them. If they couldn't be bothered to respond to customers who had taken the time to write down a few pointers, then we weren't convinced that a response to a verbal complaint would have faired any better. We won't be staying here again, as although it was clean and comfortable and the breakfast was excellent (compliments to the chef) we just didn't feel that we were valued as paying customers. We have got used to smiling, friendly staff at other local hotels who can't do enough for us - this includes the budget hotels. The Cheltenham Regency staff were polite enough, but on the whole didn't seem too bothered about their customers. Our review is at odds with other reviews of the hotel so perhaps we were just unlucky, but there was no apology or even acknowledgement of our written complaint, which seems to us not the right way for management to run their hotel.
