5AA Assessed Hotel Ratings explained
North Bovey, Dartmoor National Park, Dartmoor, TQ13 8RE
Bovey Castle is a throwback to the grandiose extravagance of the 1920s with the charm and opulence of that time retained through striking period furnishings and decoration. The luxury accommodation is divided between 64 bedrooms and 14 luxury lodges while the estate includes an 18 hole championship golf course event and conference facilities the UKs flagship SUNDARI spa and one of the most extensive selections of activities for all ages. Accommodation in the hotel includes Single Classic and Castle bedrooms each designed for single occupancy or short breaks. The larger and more deluxe Superior Castle and Valley Castle rooms promise spectacular views of the surrounding national park and hotel estate with the River Bovey meandering through the golf course. Each suite at Bovey Castle boasts a unique layout with superior size bedrooms spacious bathrooms and uninterrupted views of the valley courtyard or first tee of the golf course. Our Junior State Family State and Grand State suites are all beautifully-appointed and finished to the highest standards of luxury and comfort. The resort team aim to ensure that our guests have everything they need to fully enjoy their stay at Bovey Castle. From lazy thrills such as making cider and sloe gin or archery to high-octane thrills such as clay pigeon shooting and quad biking. During school holidays Bovey Rangers keeps the 7-14 years olds busy with different daily activities and for the younger children the Playroom is available. Using and giving back to local food producers is integral to Bovey Castle with ingredients sourced from the moorland and coastline to create seasonally changing menus in two restaurants The Edwardian Grill and Castle Bistro. The quintessentially English affair that is afternoon tea retains its ceremonial glamour best enjoyed from the panoramic window seats in the Cathedral Room and Adam Room.

A weekend break in Dartmoor
a very lovely hotel, with exceptionally attentive staff, in the most beautiful surroundings... a great spa, pool etc. Food was excellent in both restaurants... not sure that I fully understand the need for a standard surcharge 15% though ;-)

Fantastic Location but very poor service
We had a two night visit and expected to be pampered a bit. The service was awful. There was not enough room in the bar and staff did not check to see if we wanted to be served elsewhere. We wandered around and sat for a while trying to get a drink before dinner but eventually had to ask three staff, the last one did eventually get us drinks menus.
The bistro was not full but staff were not very attentive but did take plates away before both of us were finished.
Going into the bistro the staff turn away to fill in their forms so we have a view of their backsides until eventually they finished colouring in their sheets and taken to a table. Turn the table around guys so at least we are looking at your faces when you are doing the paperwork. Better still - take us to the table and then do the paperwork. The food was ok but not special but not value for money.
Some tatty carpets in the piano bar and elsewhere, it looked like a big hotel in staff chaos - spilling drinks as they took breakfast up stairs and really was painful (funny) to watch staff flounder.
One guest ordered drinks and had to come back 30 mins later because staff had "forgotten all about it".
Although the service charges were not currently earned they staff are so disorganized that when checking my bill today, they forgot to add drinks to our room we bough on the first night ... so I guess it balances out ... however, check your bill carefully as you may end up with somebody else's purchases!
The location and hotel building were excellent however but that has more to do with the guy that built the place in the early 1900's than the current owners.
I will be recommending to my friends that if they want a stunning location and 20th century building then go to the Bovel but don't expect stunning service or pampering from staff.

Beautiful Hotel
Bovey Castle is a truely beautiful building in a simply stunning location. The staff are very attentive with no request ever too difficult, being completed quickly and effciently. Food was delicious with a good choice from both restaurants & great wine list. We relaxed and read and drank - a wonderful weekend away.
