Good Small Country Town Pub

Stopped here overnight to break up a journey between Scotland and Kent.

I had previously discovered Alston whilst walking the Pennine Way and the town does have a lot of interest with its narrow cobbled main street and narrow gauge railway but also does to be honest seem a little run down. However once inside I experienced a very warm welcome from arrival to departure. Food is high quality bar type food at a very reasonable prices. The bar was comfortably full with both residents and locals on a Friday evening. The most comfy bed and duvet I experienced in a week away from home. Definitely my sort of place (they even have real marmite jars on each table during breakfast!) and I will certainly be staying again. ps the B road from Alston to Middleton in Teesdale through upper Teesdale is a scenic delight and one of the norths best kept secrets
