Thornbank Guest House Windermere is a friendly bed and breakfast, providing comfortable affordable accommodation for the discerning guest, situated in a quiet residential area of Windermere within walking distance of Bowness, in the English Lake District, an area of outstanding beauty. Our family ensuite bedrooms are suitable for children under 15yrs. Bowness is the ideal base for mountaining, canoeing, sailing, walking or just relaxing and enjoying the scenery.

A gentle stroll takes you to the shops in Windermere and Bowness, together with restaurants and bars. Alternatively enjoy a round of golf in the superb surroundings at the Windermere Golf Club. Thornbank Guest House is located between Windermere and Bowness on the lake. The area offers the vistor to the lakes a wealth of attractions from quaint little villages enriched in history to the specatular beauty the area has to offer. Thornbank is ideally located to see this magnificent scenery.

Very disappointing

We had high expectations for this b&b from the other reviews but we're very disappointed.

Under powered show that stopped working on the last night. Hard bed with lumpy pillows. Dried out breakfast. Bathroom not cleaned during our stay. We have have had much better elsewhere.

Given the degree of your dissatisfaction we feel that a full response is warranted taking each of your points in turn.

Our current room cleaning policy is a full clean of the bedrooms and bathrooms once and midway in any 7 day stay (i.e. the 3rd or 4th day of occupation) and this includes replacement of bedding, all towels and flannels.

We will, of course , clean and change linen and towels more frequently if either a) rooms are “heavily used” (daily if necessary) or b) if cleaning and changing of bedlinen and /or towels is requested more frequently by the Guest. However, in your particular case, it was decided that an additional clean was not required but we do respect that in

your opinion our policy did not meet your personal expectation.

The our Housekeeping Policy will be made clearer in our bedroom information folder which will also be available for viewing on our new Website, which is currently under construction and nearing completion.

We are very sorry that you found the bed uncomfortable during your stay. We are sure you will understand that the comfort of any hotel bed is a matter of personal preference. All of our mattresses’ are of hotel quality (which is medium to firm in comfort). We are also able to offer firm or soft pillows on request and all pillows are changed at least once per season.

With reference to the shower, which you made us aware at your check out, it was immediately inspected and was found to be failing. We do keep spares of these units for such eventualities and the shower was replaced that same day. We are very sorry that you had to suffer the inconvenience of a poorly operating shower and had we known it was failing during your stay we could have replaced it.

Regarding the quality of our breakfasts, of which we are most proud, it grieves us deeply that you had cause to find fault here. We outline in full our pre-order breakfast philosophy (order the night before) in our information folder, this is a growing trend in the B&B sector the benefits of which, amongst other things include increasing efficiency of

service, reducing food waste at breakfast times which in turn keep business costs and therefore room rate inflation low. Our hot breakfast options are prepared from scratch within the hour before breakfast service, using fresh produce and kept to be at its best for the full length of the service period. Again we regret that the cooked breakfast didn’t meet your expectations.

Regarding Mobility and Accessibility, we make no special claims to be able accommodate people of limited mobility other than offering a room on the lower ground floor, via a rear entrance, to eliminate the use of stairs. The majority of B&B accommodation in this area have been fashioned from late Victorian ex-private residences and therefore are limited in scope

for such modification. Steps and stairs are a common feature of such properties in this area. In our case we have made adequate provision for accessibility by the installation of hand rails where necessary. We do have available for view on our website a detailed accessibility statement detailing the number, length and width of hall ways, steps and stairs and the proportions of each room.

Sadly there is no place for displaying this document on third party booking sites and they do not allow links to our own website.

So to conclude, we advertise ourselves as a Quality Bed and Breakfast, we have aspired to live up to this title for the last 13 years. We know that you, as a seasoned traveller, will appreciate that all establishments vary in the way they operate and we do explicitly say in our information folder that we will always try to accommodate individual guest requests where ever possible. However, falling short in the fundamentals is something we take very seriously and as a result of your experience with us, we invite you to contact us directly to should you wish to discuss your stay further.

Lovely easter break

We had a great time at thorne bank house on arrival jane greeted us showed us to our room and told us lots of information about the local area we had a list with restaurant names types of food served and telephone numbers a great little book of different walks in the area a fantastic room and amazing weather all wend.Thone bank house is ideally situated has car parking and is suitable for any type of traveller breakfast was great and were thinking of planning our next visit already.
