About the hotel

The King's Head- a JD Wetherspoon Hotel is a thorn in the side of those who believe that beautiful Welsh towns start with a ‘Ll’, the ancient county town of Monmouth has a fascinating past and a wealth of historical and natural attractions. The birthplace of Henry V in 1387, Monmouth has fiercely guarded the Welsh heartland from invaders across the Wye Valley for nearly 1,000 years. The town is entered through a spectacular 13th-century bridge gate across the River Monmow, with a unique fortified gatehouse.

Its medieval street plan intact, visitors are transported to a world of 11th-century priories, the old market in Agincourt Square and the Shire Hall Court Rooms – unchanged since the trials of the Chartist leaders. Out of town, you’ll find yourself in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with the world-famous Tintern Abbey, the Forest of Dean and Offa’s Dyke to hand. Looking west are Abergavenny and its Roman fort, the Brecon Beacons and a posse of fabulous historic sites connected to the roguish Owen Glendwr.

Our first experience of staying at a Wetherspoons hotel

We are regular Wetherspoons customers at their many pubs where we regularly eat and drink comfortable in the knowledge that we will receive good value food and drink of an expected standard.

Our experience of staying at the Kings Head in Monmouth reflected our expectations. It is a delightful old place, very welcoming, we would not hesitate to return or recommend it.

Great value in a charming town

Have to travel to this area several times a year for business.

As it's an area of outstanding natural beauty I find it difficult to find any room free and at a reasonable price in and around the local area. Have found the Kings Head central to me for my business, always reasonably priced with good, clean and larger than standard rooms. TV in room is always larger than the regular ones found in most hotels/B &Bs and has most of e channels you expect, not truncated to a few management selected ones. Staff are helpful and efficient. Bar is busy and well stocked, and for me a good sign is that local folk use it. Food is excellent with good portions. Every week night has a special on and well worth trying. Tuesday Steak night was my favourite. Will stay every time I am able to when in area.
