If you are looking for the comfort and relative luxury of a Hilton or,similar you are not going to get it at this price. What you do get however is a friendly welcome and the comfiest bed you will have ever slept in.At £47.50 per night ( + another fiver each for breakfast )all you really expect are the basics - and this exactly what you get.We were booked into the double ensuite room called Simba. It was basic. The en-suite part was extremely small and it was difficult to sit on the loo without bashing your legs.We could not get the shower to produce hot water on Sunday morning so had to make do with a strip down wash which was inconvenient but not the end of the world. The room is directly above the small downstairs area where the evenings entertainment was performing although they may as well have been in the room with us it was so loud.upon opening the bedroom window at about 10pm Saturday night you also got the added benefit of hearing the detailed conversations of every single person who went outside for a cigarette as this area is about 4 feet below the window, coupled with the music this was definitely not the quietest room I have ever slept in.A TV was provided int he room although it only had at most a 15" screen.Perhaps the biggest problem was that although we could lock the room from the outside it was not possible to lock it from the inside so we had to prop a chair up against the door to stop anybody else intruding during the night.
Breakfast was 2 sausages,2 bacon,an egg, beans, hash brown, half a tomato and a few button mushroom halves all served with tea toast and orange juice..We knew that at this price and with such availability we were not going to get 5 star facilities and we had read previous reviews so knew what to expect. It would be very easy to rip this place apart but there is something about it that leaves you with a sense of warmth, comfort and friendliness and if you are touring the peaks it is ideally situated a couple of miles outside Holmfirth. The pub doesn't serve food but there is a reasonable alternative about 2 minutes walk away or you can get a cab down into Holmfirth itself where there is a much bigger choice of food..Pub management are under no illusions about the place and are working hard to upgrade everything but of course this will take time. The Red Lion is a decent honest establishment that offers very basic facilities but which leaves you with a feeling of warmth and friendliness and we would both stay there again if in the area overnight.
