About the hotel

This truly wonderful public house offers a restaurant and accommodation. Being on the doorstep of Durham, it is an ideal location to enjoy the area's heritage. Brandon Village is only 3 miles from the centre of Durham City.

The building itself was originally an Old Coaching Inn and is over 300 years old. While still retaining a lot of the original features and charm It has been tastefully modernised with the restaurant is situated at the rear of the pub and the old stables and courtyard providing excellent accommodation. The Inn is ran by Kay and she offers a warm welcome to all guests. There are ten en suite bedrooms, four doubles, five twins and a family room which can sleep four people. We are located 3 miles west from Durham City where you can visit the wonderful Cathedral and Castle or stroll along the banks of the River Wear. For any Cricket enthusiast the Emerites cricket ground at Chester Le Street is only 6 miles. A great day out can be had at Beamish which is only 8 miles away. The two major cities of the North East, Newcastle & Sunderland, are within 20 miles. For a more relaxing day out, the unspoilt countryside of the Durham Dales are only 10 miles away. The fantastic site of High Force is easily accessible too.

A pleasant enough stay

I only needed a comfy night's stay so the place was ok for that.

Manager was nice and room ok. I was surprised that a cooked breakfast wasn't included and to have one was extra so I just had the basic cereal and toast offered. It was in a handy spot for me. I may use it again.

Bay Horse Inn

This review is written a couple of weeks after our stay because I first wrote to the management to give them the opportunity to answer our complaints.

We paid £89 for our room (and breakfast) before being given the key. The room was very dirty and had not been prepared properly for customers by the cleaner and obviously had not been checked by the management. The staff when seeing the state of the room moved us to another room. The carpet in this room was also very dirty and stained. The mattress on the double bed had no mattress protector, just a sheet over the mattress, which did not protect against staining on the mattress. The springs coming through gave us a very uncomfortable night's sleep. Leaving early, we knew that we were unable to have breakfast, but we would have had to have paid extra for a full English breakfast. Having written to the manageress, she offered us a free night's stay at the pub, which we declined because we have no reason to travel all the way to Durham again. I had hoped the management would make some recompense for us having to pay £89 for a substandard room. The room was not worth £89. The following week the room would have cost us a third of this price. (The usual price for the room). The price had apparently been raised to take advantage of the demand for accommodation required for graduation week at Durham University.
