About the hotel

THE LOCATION Situated between between Sandleheath and Fordingbridge – a riverside town on the edge of The New Forest. The town is a 10 minute walk away. The old railway line is at the end of the road and leads to many more walks, bluebell woods and open countryside.

Ask and we will give you directions. Salisbury is 12 miles away to the north whilst Bournemouth and The Jurassic Coast are an easy drive away. THE PUB Slightly quirky interior edging towards shabby chic with an eclectic mix of stuff on the walls, a fireplace and a screen showing old black and white movies. There is also a rather more formal dining area however, we are a pub not a restaurant. We serve Ringwood ales and being a Marston’s pub we have a wide range to choose from for a guest ale although Boondoggle does seem to be a recurring favourite. THE ROOMS There are 3 doubles and a twin, all with en suite shower rooms. They were originally stables so are small, cosy and quiet and have a tv, cafetiere and free Wi-Fi. THE FOOD The food is amazing. Our chef, Scott Bennett, was a head chef at Carey’s Manor in Brockenhurst and has devised the most wonderful menu using seasonal produce from The New Forest and surrounds. It will be a constantly changing feast but expect to see things like Baked Dressed Lymington Crab Mornay, Seasonal Salad & Jersey Royals, Twice Cooked New Forest Pork Belly, Black Pudding, Spring Greens & Champ. There are also pub classics like 28 Day Hampshire Beef Burger, Toasted Bun, Loosehanger Cheese, Bacon, Pickle & Hand Cut Chips. Lots of things for veggies including a stunning Potato & Onion Rosti, Topped with Roast Butternut Squash, Chestnut Mushrooms & Ricotta, Garlic & Sage Sauce. And don’t forget, AJ’s is home to probably the best Knickerbocker Glory on the planet. AUGUSTUS JOHN was a Welsh painter. Lived his last years in Fordingbridge, The Railway Hotel, as it was then, was his preferred watering hole. His favourite bar stool still remains and on a dark and stormy night. . . .

Augustus John Fordingbridge

The food and service were excellent.

The pub itself is very good and everybody was very friendly. There is ample on site parking. The location on the edge of the New Forest is first class. The bedroom and ensuite were in need of modernisation but, to be fair, the landlord did explain on arrival that he had not been there long and this was on his "to do" list.
