Youth Hostel

If you have bad knees request a first or second floor room.

There is no elevator. Customer service is slow but friendly. Considering its convenient location, price was ok for a single private room with shared bathroom.

One time experience

Everyone must stay in one of these places to realise what they have back home.

Thank god it was only 4 nights. Rooms were small, prices were high(due to the fringe). Floors were filthy, towels provided at a charge. To top it all we had someone try to get in our room at 4am, quite a frightening experience when your 2 floors up with one way in and one way out and windows that only open 3 inches. To be fair they did move us to a better room.

The main light bulb in the room was missing and there wasn't hot water for the shower at night, but otherwise everything was fine.

Fringe goer

Very basic, but then also very cheap, so this was not a problem.

Bathrooms needed some work - some of the toilet seats were missing or not fully attached. Very central.

The hostel is in good location.

It provided a good customer swrvice. It is moderately easy to find the hotel. Near to bus station and Waverly train station. However the quality of the room is not good. The radiator was not qorking and there was no attempt to fix it inspite we informed at the reception about it. The toilets and shower are moderately ok. The building is quite old therefore there is a limited opportunity for modern facilities in the building. We had to climbe 5th floor to enter our room. Overall value for money is not 100% achieved but its not extremely bad.

Bargain room in the centre of Edinburgh

The room was a bargain price during the time of Edinburgh Fringe, and it could not have been more central (although Cowgate is quite possibly the worst street in Edinburgh).

I had read a lot of reviews in advance, so knew what to expect. The hostel is student accommodation which is let out during the summer. The young lady on reception could not have been more friendly or helpful. I was originally scheduled to sleep in a ground floor room but I knew how noisy Cowgate was every night, so I asked to be moved to a higher floor, which she did without any trouble. There was no lift to go up the four floors but I'm reasonably active so it was no problem with my bags. The room was fairly spacious for a student room and in good order. It was certainly clean and tidy. No real view from the window apart from a wall on the left and part of the courtyard on the right. Naturally, no mirror or TV or anything of the sort in the room. The bed wasn't very comfortable but I did manage to sleep OK (earplugs necessary because of the shouting on the street). I couldn't use the bathroom - the toilet seat was broken and there was no lock on the door. Apart from all that, I got more from the place than I expected. It's not a central base for a holiday, but it's a good place if you need somewhere to stay for one night and it affords very good value for money.
