4Visit Scotland Assessed Hotel Ratings explained
1 Tower Place , Edinburgh, EH6 7DB
If you’re looking for a stylish hotel in Scotland’s capital city, there’s only one place to go. The Mal is a gorgeous boutique hotel in Edinburgh, perched on the banks of the Forth in Leith, and only minutes from the hubbub of the city centre.

Whether you’re a serious shopper, theatre-goer or 24hr socialite, the Edinburgh Mal has something to offer you. There is a fantastic brasserie, a well-stocked wine cellar and a bar which serves the perfect cocktail for starting or ending your evening on a high note and if the weather suits, you can even enjoy some alfresco dining or drinking on the lively terrace. The brasserie serves great-tasting cuisine, prepared with incredible local ingredients, served up with a genuine excitement. Whether it’s business lunches, quick light healthy bites or a romantic dinner for two, you simply have to sample Scotland’s finest. As for the Mal Bar, it is the favourite retreat of Edinburgh’s movers and shakers, and serves up a glorious mix of vino, cocktails, bubbly, frothy coffees and ultra tasty anytime snacks.

The hotel gym, Gymtonic, is the perfect place for those of you who just can’t survive without some exercise. Try out the resistance and running machines or free weights. There’s everything you need. If you feel the need for speed out in the city, check out Mal’s jogging maps in your room, small but perfectly formed routes for runners of all shapes, sizes and flavours.

Perfectly suited for a business trip or luxury weekend break, this is a truly stunning hotel which offers all the luxury you’d expect from Malmaison boutique hotel.

That’s Mal life.

A bit disappointing I am sad to say..............
I expected a really good hotel when I booked the Malmaison in Edinburgh for our girlie weekend. The hotel itself is in an ideal location for what we wanted but there were several issues that caused concern. There is only really lift access to the floors - using the stairs is difficult as there are several parts to the hotel - being a bit claustrophobic I struggled a bit with the lifts as everything in the hotel is so dark. The corridors are narrow and painted dark teal blue, the carpet is dark with a thin pale border. The bedrooms are smallish (well ours was) and dark and there was little natural light as our room window was adjacent to another outside wall. There was no hot water on the Sunday morning due to a boiler issue, breakfast was chaotic on the Sunday too. The dining area was noisy, staff clumped about on the wooden floor and the limited selection of fruit juice was disappointing. Grapefruit juice doesn't suit everyone (especially if you are on medication that it interacts with!) which only left orange juice - I would have liked the choice of apple or cranberry - the cooked breakfast was not 'hot' when it was served, there was no sweetener on the breakfast table etc. We had no milk of any sort in our room when we arrived and had to ask for some which took a wee while to arrive by which time the tea we had made was cold. These issues probably sound like moaning for moaning's sake but it ws not the standard that I expected at Malmaison. The receptionist was very nice and helpful and explained that all Malmaison hotels are dark - it is a theme of the company. I won't be back I don't think. Shame.

Beautiful location and hotel but food could be much better
Great hotel, lovely room and fantastic location. Dinner was distinctly average as was breakfast. Work on the food and this place would just be perfect
