Euro Hostel Edinbrugh Halls
2 person room was basic with cheap mattress, but I found it OK, double wardrobe plus table and chair but no mirror in the room.
The only down sides was the room and corridor doors banged if you did not close them carefully which could could be a problem if you had inconsiderate neighbours and no lift so if you on an upper floor this could be an issue with heavy bags or just getting up and down, but I think there are lifts if you are in the apartment type accommodation?. There were 2 bathrooms and 2 toilets in the corridor shared between 6 rooms, each bathroom had a basin with mirror, toilet and shower, toilet rolls provided. The shared kitchen was at the end of the corridor with all you needed for self catering - 2 electric cookers, microwave, pots, pans knife & folks, cups, glasses etc. but the cooker did not have any indication on the dials so it was a guessing game to get the correct ring and setting, "all added to the fun though", 3 fridge freezers and a large table with bench style seating. The hostel is situated on Cowgate (entrance on Guthrie St) which is in the heart of the old town and the centre of the nightlife in Edinburgh with countless bars, pubs and clubs and places to eat so if you got a room overlooking Gowgate I would suspect that it could be quite noisy with some bars open till 5am. Unfortunately rooms are allocated in advance and cannot be changed so if you want a quieter inner courtyard room on a lower floor it may be wise to request one when booking. We travelled by car and used the Park & Ride car park at Straiton (approx. 5 miles from the centre) for 2 nights 3 days (free) and caught the 67 bus (£1.60) to George IV Bridge, then a short walk down Victoria Street to Gowgate, (approx.5 min) Note - Bus 67 does not run on Saturdays or Sundays so alternatively return by bus 47 from from Surgeons Hall bus stop near Nicolson Square on Nicolson Street, i.e. turn right out of the hostel and access Southbridge via Guthrie St then turn right on Southbridge and is the second bus stop which is just passed Nicolson Square, again approx. 5 - 10 min walk. Note - Each bus stop displays the bus numbers that stop there. Edinbrugh Castle and Royal Mile are the next street up from Gowgate and Princess Street is a only a 10 minute walk away so the location could not have been better. Be prepared for quite steep hills and rises where ever you walk!!.
If you are looking for hostel type accommodation in a great location you wont do much better than this one. The train station is also near by approx 5 - 10 minutes walk.
