Not shabby chic, just shabby.Room 1 -double bed was terrible with half the bed slats not attached to the bed frame.

Single bed mattress was awful - so unbelievably knackered and saggy that my son fell out of it in the night. Twiggy lamp didn't work in wobbly socket. Some sort of new water leak on the ceiling which was worse on waking. In the morning the fire door on the landing was unusable as the architrave had fallen off the top of the frame and jammed the door open. We went for 9am cooked breakfast but didn't get it until 10am. Also The Elleray does not benefit from having no reception area or at least directions to where you should do this.

Pleasant enough stay but a little bit unorganised

Our stay was mostly lovely, the room was a good size and clean, the bed was very comfortable and the first night we had an amazing night sleep.

However the second night was terrible, we had road works directly outside our window which started in the evening and lasted until 4am. Nobody could sleep through that amount of noise and flashing lights.

The hotel can't be blamed for the roadworks, but I feel that it was very poorly organised to put us in the room directly above the roadworks when other rooms on the other side of the hotel, away from the road, were empty (we were the only guests). We mentioned our terrible night to the staff in the morning, to which they said they also didn't sleep well but did not offer an apology or compensation. The room was clean but in need of a good coat of paint, there were scuff marks on the walls, and when we arrived there was barely any toilet roll. The breakfast was lovely, made to order and tasted great. If it wasn't for the roadworks I would recommend this hotel to people who wanted a good night sleep with no frills after a long day hiking.
