Comfortable stay

Easy to find and plenty of free parking.

Our room was in the annex and was spacious and quiet. Plenty of choice at breakfast with efficient service. Overall a comfortable and enjoyable stay

Good nights slleep

Best Western has an enviable reputation in the hotel business and you wont be disappointed with the Sea Hotel at South Shields.

Next door to the beach and very quiet so got a good nights sleep. Staff are polite and friendly. Food was excellent and very promptly served at breakfast. One thing that lets this hotel down is the lack of lift which is really a big issue when you get to be 68. Will return though as the pros out-way the cons.

Ok stay

Hotel was good and clean , bar service average as bar person kept disappearing , biggest fault was the bathroom , shower was run off bath taps so not enough pressure to shower a cat , I have informed them but I suppose so has everyone else .

Heard a noise all night on our first night a sort of drilling sound ??. turned out to be the wind hurling around the bathroom because the window was left open good job I had plenty to drink so managed some sleep , overall a good stay and will return provided I have a different room

my thoughts on the hotel

My overnight stay at this hotel was disappointing.

The staff were friendly and helpful, the hotel was clean but they were about the only plus points. Upon arrival I was informed at reception that the locking system for the rooms was not working and that I would have to be let into my room each time I needed to gain entry. I appreciate that this breakdown was probably beyond the control of the hotel staff. However there were a number of minus points that add up to a pretty unenjoyable experience. Firstly, the light over the bed did not work. I wanted to read in bed but the room as a result was badly lit. Some of the light switches from the bedside were broken. Therefore every time I wanted to turn the the light on and off I had to get out of bed. When I plugged my laptop into a socket it was obvious the socket was not fixed to the wall properly.

My biggest issue was the lack of hot water. When I arrived I wanted a shower( at 6.30 pm) but the water was tepid bordering on cold so I waited until the following morning( 7.30 pm). The water was still the same - I had a hasty and unpleasant shower. I find that especially unnacceptable. Part of the tap fixture on the handbasin was missing, which to me is just symptomatic of a lack of attention to detail. I had no issues with the bed . The room at times was noisy - a whirring sound kept coming into the room, I assume, from the kitchens. The restaurant staff were polite and helpful but were reactive rather than proactive. Do you really have to have to ask for sauce to go with a cooked breakfast or mustard to go with a steak. It looked like I was the only customer in the restaurant that evening so the staff were hardly stretched, but I did feel when I walked in that I was disturbing their evening. At breakfast, there were no more that three other guests for the half hour I was there, but the fruit juice jugs were empty when I arrived and still empty when I left. I ordered steak for dinner and it was acceptable, but only just being overcooked.The waitress warned me about the plate being hot. It was stone cold.The best thing about the dinner was the chips.The side salad ( which I wasn't charged for?) was tired and scruffy. I expect better than that for £19.00.

Now you can argue that I could have asked for juice, I could have asked someone to fix the bedroom light, I could have asked for hotter water in the showers, I could have asked for another room, I could have sent my steak back, but I was tired, unwell and just didn't have the energy to deal with it, and really why should you have to. I didn't feel the staff were poorly trained, but they did seem slightly demoralised,and the hotel clearly needs an injection of capital and a bit of "ooomph". As a final comment, before I get slated as a whinging hard- to- please customer, I have stayed in hundreds of hotels and I have never left a negative review before.

Very friendly helpful staff from arrival to dining and checking out.

Can't really say more about the food as I only had a salad which was heaped on the plate. Very generous portions if not a little too much for me. Would definitely stay again. Hotel was very clean if not a little tired but terrific staff made up for this.
