About the hotel

The Excelsior hotel is a modern day Bed and Breakfast hotel set in a Georgian Townhouse in a private garden square directly opposite Kings Cross and St Pancras International train station. We focus on offering clean accommodation in a central London location . All our rooms are en suite and have been designed to a good standard.

Our rooms are compact and clean and all have Flat Screen TV’s and have wireless internet connection. All rooms are serviced daily and we provide all linen and fresh large towels. Our rooms also inlcude safes; kettles and complementary tea ,coffee and milk portions. All rooms have hairdryers and cupboards and a small desk and chair. All ensuites are equipped with complementary amenities : Shower gels and soap . All of these services are included in the price as well as VAT. Our location is ideal; we are situated in a quiet square in Kings Cross. We are close to all London’s Major attractions and great shopping locations. From Kings Cross train station all parts of London are easily accessible as well as trains to all parts of England and Scotland. We are also opposite St Pancras international train station from which you can catch the Eurostar to France and Belgium. Please note our check in is at No 39 Argyle Square at our sister hotel ( 2 doors away ) and we serve breakfast at our other hotel at No 29 Argyle Square ( 10 seconds walk ) .

Excellent value for money

I was concerned about what we should expect as the rate was reasonable, compared to other hotels.

We were very pleasantly surprised. The room was small-ish, with the bed taking up the vast proporton of the floor space. The bed was very comfortable and we slept very well. The bathroom was small but adequate. There was no reception or bar in the hotel which was not a problem for us as we were only needing somewhere to sleep after a night at the theatre. Other people might expect more facilities. All in all, perfectly adequate and good value for money.

Quite possibly the worst overnight stay in a hotel I've ever had

I don't think paying £99 per night is overly cheap, so I expected a whole lot more from my stay that I got.

The customer service is virtually non-existent. We arrived at about 9:30pm, after a very long train ride, at which time, there doesn't seem to be a proper receptionist working. The man behind the desk gave the impression of being a night guard and we barely received any sort of greeting, much less a welcome. No "hello, enjoy your stay" etc. He didn't appear to speak English very well and was not attempting to be helpful/friendly. Eventually, a colleague of his emerged from nowhere and was at least a little bit more communicative. All through the night from our room, we could here a loud beeping sound, like something an alarm would do. We had hoped it would eventually stop, once we'd settled into our room, because we were too exhausted to bear going back out to the reception (which by the way you have to access by going back outside into the street to a building next door- their sister hotel apparently). The infernal beeping merrily carried on all through the night, non-stop. After a fitful night of sleep, we gave up and tried to leave as quickly as we could the following morning. We went to check out. We merely stated that's what we were doing whilst handing in the key, and waited for anything else. Nevermind that we weren't asked to confirm our names or what room we were staying in (this was an actual receptionist this time), we weren't asked any of the usual courtesy questions like "how was your stay with us?" Since noone seemed to care, and only felt the need to say "that's it" after handing the keys in, we gave up, not even bothering to mention what an awful night we had with the beeping and the early morning when we woke up to the loudest talking/noise from the street outside our window. No breakfast included in this stay either. Verdict: I don't think you'd ever find me in this hotel ever again.
