Great base for exploring Rothesay and Bute
My wife and I stayed at the Victoria for a two-night visit to Bute.
The hotel is barely a two-minute drive from the ferry - be aware, there is no dedicated parking, but on-street parking is available outside the hotel. The Victoria itself is curiously laid out - reception is up a flight of stairs, via a small office outside the main dining room. Our room was very clean, with a lovely view of the promenade and putting greens, and across the bay. The bathroom was looking a little tired though - could have been doing with some tlc, especially the grouting round the shower area. But everything worked fine. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful, and the food was first-class, both at breakfast and in the evening. We dined both nights in the main dining room, although there is also a less formal separate eating area at the Ghillies bar downstairs (the dining room is certainly not stuffy or over-formal, however). We really enjoyed our stay, and as a base for exploring the lovely island of Bute, the hotel is ideally situated. I just feel that this lovely old building with its iconic lampposts at the entrance has the potential to really benefit from an overhaul to bring it right up to modern standards.
