About the hotel

The Rivendell was built in 1924 and is totally unique and idyllic in the area. The architect who designed it was one of six students who studied directly under Charles Rennie Mackintosh at Glasgow school of art and his influence is obvious throughout. The house was of private residence of the Penman family who prospered locally as early exponents of the motor trade.

The house was then purchased in 2002 by its current owner, Bruce Harper and underwent a total renovation maintaining the original features throughout.

Gem of a Place

What a lovely find.

We were spending Easter weekend in Dumfries to celebrate my cousins 50th birthday who lives there. Our original accommodation booking for another hotel fell through and I'm so glad it did. This gem of an establishment made you feel so special. Designed by a student of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the evidence was everywhere.

We had Room 1 on the first floor at the front of the hotel. Huge four poster bed, lovely furniture and a bay window overlooking the front garden. Large wall mounted flat screen TV and a choice of 2 free Wi-Fi networks to join. Complimentary bottled water and generous tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuit offerings. Powerful shower in the bathroom with loads of hot water.

Breakfast, what can I say. Probably the best cooked breakfast I've had in a Hotel or B&B. Another reviewer already mentioned it but I'm going to ask again - "How do you cook your mushrooms. They were amazing!". I've raved about The Rivendell to anyone who will listen and am already looking for an excuse to return to Dumfries to bother (I mean visit) my cousin so I can stay here again. A truly magical place!
