Thoroughly fulfilled our requirement for a 2-night stay in the area.
Wheres the management?
We have stayed at the Crown several times, and there never really seems to be anyone in charge, the staff in the past have always been pleasant and helpful but this time I felt that standards had really slipped.
On arrival there was about 4 staff behind the bar, and no one greeted us with a smile. We were asked our name and then I think she was polish, a girl looked for our booking, she keyed something into the computer and then said have we stayed before, we replied yes, and then we were given the key and told room 8 was upstairs in the main house. The room was nice, but very hot, we opened windows and put the fan on straight away. there were no toiletries, soap or biscuits in the room which I felt was a bit mean due to the room costing 110.00 a night. After a pretty uncomfortable night due to the heat. we went down to breakfast, it took a while for someone to look after us, we gave our order and were a bit surprised that you could see the breakfast chef cooking our meals in a tatty old personal coat (HYGIENE ARRAGH!!!) then made a comment to another chef, that he couldn't wait to get home and have a shower and a shave, surely he should have done this before he came to work??. The breakfast was okay, but not stunning. On checkout we were not asked if we enjoyed our stay, and were told our room rate was 120.00 . I replied that we had booked with Late Rooms and that the confirmation was for 110.00. I was informed that 110.00 was for single occupancy. We paid the bill and then went to leave, we had our ipad with us and I checked the confirmation and it did indeed say 110.00 for two adults with breakfast. we went back to the crown and showed the confirmation and had 10.00 refunded and an apology was given. I suspect that the lady changed the rate on arrival for our room. We do like staying here, but some training and supervision needs to happen, the restaurant in the pub was almost empty at 8.00p.m.on a Saturday night, we thought that the village must be quiet as it was half-term, but all the other restaurants were full and turning people away, does that not say something is wrong?
