About the hotel

The Butchers Arms is a 13th century Inn and restaurant with accommodation. Built using Forest stone the building is one you won't forget with traditional beamed ceilings, stoned walls and a open log fire place, you'll feel right at home as soon as you walk in. We are located in the picturesque village of Clearwell.

The village is on the entrance to the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley where we boast walking, canoeing, climbing, caving, cycling and mountain biking. There are many specialists in the area who can help you realise your ambitions. We have a wealth of attractions to welcome you from museums to mazes, from show caves to steam trains. When that is all said and done come back to us and enjoy the long summer evenings outside in our beer garden or in the winter warm up around our open log fire and enjoy some excellent food, real ales and fine wine.

A no frills, clean and comfortable room which I only spent a few hours in as I was visiting for a wedding in the area.

For the money it is only somewhere to get your head down and clean. Location is a 3-5 minute walk from the castle which was perfect for the stay. Would have been nice as a couple to have the option of a double bed but I understand that it everyone would be a couple. Due to the area, no mobile coverage for most networks, it would have been nice to have free wifi as an app could allow calls in and out. Breakfast was very basic but easily accessible and as described on booking. By the time I needed to checkout at 10am (my choice) the main building wasn't open to potentially have a cooked breakfast. It's a quite village and cheap option. I recommend the stay.

Must be the best place to stay if you are going to a wedding at Clearwell castle

The room was clean if a bit dated in furnishings.

The bathroom was brand new and lovely with marble tiles- very nice. The staff were friendly and great though the room wasn't quite ready on time. Everything was great although the Nescafe coffee in the room could do with being replaced by something better like maybe a Rombouts filter. You can walk to the church in two minutes.
