About the hotel

Standing in a commanding position, high on the Galloway Cliffs, The Portpatrick Hotel is magical and the vistas are unspoilt offering some of the most spectacular views in Britain. As well as comfortable bedrooms with everything you would expect in a modern establishment, the Portpatrick Hotel also offers stunningly decorated public areas including a comfortable lounge and adjacent bar as well a spacious and elegant dining room. We are blessed with having some beautiful gardens around the hotel, we also boast our own 9-hole pitch and putt course adjacent is the excellent Dunskey Golf course.

Our location set above the quaint and beautiful fishing village of Portpatrick in a peaceful and unspoilt corner of Southern Scotland is very special. “ Pictures can’t do justice to this view” – it’s just beautiful. The village itself is small and friendly with whitewashed cottages, a picturesque coastal setting and lovely for an early evening stroll – just a great way to relax! There's plenty to see nearby with Logan Botanic Gardens and Culzean Castle being the best known attractions but there are lots more. The Mull of Galloway is another great spot, with views across to England, Ireland and the Isle of Man all from one location. The area is a haven for lovers of sports and the outdoors. You’ll also find a variety of wonderful opportunities for bird watching and fishing.

Bucket list

I first saw this hotel 25 years ago and said to myself I would stay there one day.

Well that day finally arrived. As we arrived, it appeared all I had expected. The reception was all very grand and the welcome could not have been better. We were given a room on the second floor and eagerly went up wondering what sort of luxury we were about to get. The first clue was the lock on the door, it was not very secure and looked about 50 years old. Always the optimist we entered the room. What a huge disappointment. Shabby is the best word to use. The room was very small, you could hardly get round the bed one side, no room for a bedside table or lamp even. The bathroom was very small, no shower and not enough height to stand by the toilet. The decor in the bedroom was very tasteful (not). Brown carpet, cream and green curtains, grey walls, purple "leather"chair/headboard, red lampshades, green cushions. Altogether a far different standard to the public areas. The view from the very small window was stunning. The room looked grubby and in desperate need of redecoration and refurbishment. I think we were in a very different hotel to the reviews I had read. Was this Stargate, had we gone through some wormhole or something. The breakfast was very good, lots of choice. Wifi was extremely poor, not available in rooms and the public wifi was extremely slow and inefficient. Staff were very good, posted something to us that we left behind.
