Clean hotel in lovely town, let down by poor evening meal
Initial impressions were very good, especially as the manager offered to pick us up from the town centre when we got lost after getting off the train.
He also threw in a table d'hote meal for the Friday night in view of the price we'd paid on LateRooms, which was more expensive than we'd have paid if wed booked 've the hotel's own website.
Our room was of decent size, clean and had a comfortable double bed, though it was on the small side. The bathroom was very clean, but didn't have anywhere flat (other than the top of the cistern) to store toiletries. Not a big issue, but slightly frustrating. Breakfasts in the hotel are very good, especially the porridge, which we had both days. We cannot comment on the a la carte menu, but unfortunately the table d'hote menu was disappointing; the food reminded us of school dinners, especially the winter crumble with creme anglais, which tasted suspiciously like Ambrosia custard. Staff are efficient, though it does seem strange that we couldn't have coffee served in the dining room after dinner, as the hotel wasn't full. The pool (which was our main reason for choosing the hotel) is small but very clean, and the water is pleasantly warm, which was nice after a long day's walking. One thing to bear in mind, if you're arriving by train, is that the hotel is a fair walk uphill from the town, so if you've got luggage its worth getting a taxi.
Was an OK stop off
I had been passing through the area and wanted somewhere to stop enroute and in fairness it did the job.
Dinner was a little complicated as they only offered a pre-booked dining room option (no bar menu etc) and the staff were very helpful but it felt very rushed. I think I had my 3 courses within 25 mins.
However, basic but clean room did the job for me. OK place.
