Trying too hard--focus on the basics

This is a beautiful looking olde worlde building in the pretty village of Forest Row, right beside the Ashdown Forest.

I`d booked one night while I attended a big family party. I had a 5 hour journey and had planned a lovely soak in the bath before I got my party clothes on. No hot water. I called reception and was told to try again in 20 minutes. Did so...no hot water. Called reception again and spoke to the manager, who assured me there `should` be water and that the new boilers were working. I insisted there was nothing but cold coming out of the tap. He seemed agitated. `It`s coming, it`s coming...` he shouted. By this time my cousin was due to meet me in the bar before our taxi arrived, so I had to abandon thoughts of a bath. However, waiting in vain for the hot water (which I was assured was fixed, as I left the premises for my party, soon after 6 pm...) gave me a chance to study the bathroom in detail. There was dust behind the loo and the basin. The whole feel of the room was dated, and in need of gutting and starting again. The bedroom itself had tried the romantic look , with a four poster bed. But the lace drapes looked dated, cheap and tacky, and with only a bright overhead light above--no side lights--a romantic feel would have been hard to achieve. There was lots of basic teabags and sugar sachets in the pot, but only one sachet of coffee. Overall, I was really disappointed. The next morning, I skipped the complimentary continental breakfast and went down later for a coffee. It was bright and sunny outside, but the bar was in darkness. The manager was pacing about trying to fix the fuse. `Don`t worry,` he said...` it`s romantic.` Hmm. (The coffee he brought me was nice...). On checking out, I suggested a partial refund due to the hot water failure. The manager seemed irritated, and offered me a £5 refund. I said this was much lower than I`d anticipated. `God save the queen`...he mumbled under his breath, as he stretched to a tenner off. By this time, I`d had enough. I appreciate older buildings have faults. But it wasn`t my fault. And I wish I`d pushed to find alternative accommodation but ran out of time and patience. My suggestion to the Chequers. Have far fewer rooms. That way you`d have time to clean them properly and furnish them in a classy, fresh, appropriate way.
