Tatty and in need of much TLC
Very disappointing and quite how it attracts a 3 star rating is beyond me.
This is a tatty badly maintained and poorly cleaned place. However the food was very good, tasty, good portions, well cooked and excellent value for money.
Difficult to know where to begin. I booked a double but there was given a twin. Being 6' 2" and not slim this is a problem but was the only room left. The single bed had a thick duvet but it only covered the bed and not the sides so once in bed there were gaps.
The bathroom was very tatty indeed. With obvious signs of poor cleaning, dirty grout and corners. The shower needed de-scaling and the plastic attachment broke while attempting to move the shower head. There was plenty of hot water once it arrived. The towel was a large hand towel rather than a bath size. There was only one towel per person. The towel smelt stale possibly stale cooking smells, I hope nothing worse. The bathroom light was an extremely dim bulb with nothing over or near the mirror making shaving (or make up) difficult. The bedroom faces the busy road so secondary glazing is fitted, but the outside window does not fit nor latch shut. However the road noise was successfully dampened for me and I don't like road noise.
There is a main railway line immediate to one side of the pub, conveniently hidden in the main pub image. It is a busy line until around 11 and can be heard in all of the pub however it is not that obtrusive and did not disturb me. This is an old, very old pub, dating back to the late 1600's and as such one expects noisy floorboards uneven floors and quirky stairs windows etc but that does not mean the place cannot be properly cleaned and maintained. The stairs to the rooms is narrow and steep lovely and historic but please clean the carpet and repair and paint the walls and fix the window eh guys. It was once a lovely place to stay one can see that but that was along time ago and after quite some time of neglect it will need some effort and a person with an eye for style to bring it up to a decent standard. Until it happens this is at best a last resort place to stay.
We were greeted on arrival by 2 lovely ladies and one escorted us to our room.
This is the only good thing I have to say about our stay. When we left our key on leaving there was no-one to speak to RE our issue with the room. I haven't emailed the hotel directly as I tried to contact them via email 2 weeks prior to our stay and recieved no reply. The cleaniness of the room was practically non-existant. The shower had brown marks on it's floor, there were cobwebs and spiders dotted all around the bathroom and we were unable to make ourselves a cup of tea in the morning as the kettle was covered in a thick layer of dust so we did not want to use it.
We also found the beds hard and uncomfortable. All in all I would neither use nor recommend this hotel again and certainly feel that it was not value for money.
