An Unknown Gem
I was visiting Swindon to go to The Abbey Stadium to watch the speedway meeting between the Robins and Poole Pirates and wanted to stay somewhere within walking distance of the track.
The Jovial Monk was the obvious choice particularly with its Free Parking facility. I was not disappointed. The accommodation is better than described with probably the cleanest linen and comfiest bed that I have ever slept in and with an en-suite that was more than fit for purpose. The locals in the pub could not have been friendlier and welcoming, a polar opposite of the attitudes where I live. In the morning In was offered and enjoyed a superb full English breakfast for the cost of £6 and enjoyed the company of two of the ladies that run the establishment. My car was parked in the car park outside and was fine when I returned to it. I went over to the local Co-Op store to buy a local paper and some provisions for my onward trip to the Isle of Wight and my next speedway meeting on my mini-tour and found the staff and the local people there to be as friendly and helpful as they were in the Monk. All in, a brilliant stay in a brilliant guest house / pub. (One thing that I had forgotten was that Malcolm Holloway, an ex Swindon Robin used to run the Monk until his untimely and tragic death.) When I could not get away from Swanage on Wednesday, I had no hesitation in heading straight back to the Monk for another stop over on my way to Redcar. I phoned the Monk and was quickly assured that I could stay there again and, in fact, was provided with the room that I had stayed in on the Monday and everything was a s good the second time around. I can only totally recommend the Jovial Monk not only for its superb accommodation but also as a friendly, all inclusive, caring, sharing hostelry.
Handy stop off point, worth staying.
Nothing bad to report, the pub was nice and the staff member very polite.
The room was clean but basic, there was plenty of tea, coffe, sugar and milk pots. The bed was firm but comfortable. It felt like you were staying at your nans spare room.
After a long day travelling to the RIAT and leaving home at 3.00 a.m. it was nice to get somwhere close by, in fact it's only just off the next exit.
Worth sataying and very convenient.
