"Bleak House" or "Faulty Towers"
Whilst the hotel was perfectly located for a weekend at Thruxton racing circuit, I doubt whether it will appeal to people visiting the area for any other purpose.
It looks grim and imposing on the outside and it is very nearly just as grim on the inside. The decor and general layout needs a complete overhaul to bring it up to todays accepted standards. It would probably be so costly as to make it financially more viable and certainly more appealing to just bulldose it and build a nice modern unit similar to the popular budget hotel chains. The room and bathroom were certainly clean, although the toilet brush still displayed feces from a previous occupant. The bath had one of those horrible shower curtains that drape around you whilst showering as you ponder just how many sweaty bodies it had draped previously. The shower was just an attachment to the bath taps which ensured the temperature of the water fluctuated wildly depending on how many others were using the hot water in other rooms. The bathroom tiling appeared to have been done by a D.I.Yer to a not very good standard. The mattress on the bed was very uncomfortable, the springs could be felt through the sheet. On arrival, we were checked in by an unsmiling gentleman who looked as though he would have preferred to be anywhere else. On reaching the room, it had a slight musty odor, so the first thing I wanted to do was fling open the windows they were locked despite being on an upstairs floor. With no key in sight we were obliged to contact reception to enquire re the key for opening the windows. The gentleman agreed to come up with the key, opening one window and I had to request that he also open the second window, he went off again with the key. We couldn't help feeling that he was put out by the request. A little later we decided to have a bar meal at the hotel (all that was available for dinner). I requested a steak well done, when it arrived it was very burnt on the top, I picked it up and checked underneath, it was completely black and charred on the under side. I sent it back apologising politely to the young lady behind the bar who was the only staff member who could summon up a smile. (afraid of repercussions if I didn't) She apologised and returned later with a suitable replacement. I had to ring downstairs later that evening to request the use of a hairdryer, they weren't kept in a drawer in the room, they had to be requested. Breakfast served buffet style in the dining room was tasty enough (apart from the horrible hash browns), toast had been made ready. Releaved not to have to use one of those terrible toasting machines which never work satisfactorily. Overall the place served it's purpose for one night, but I would not return even to visit Thruxton, I would travel further afield.
Very friendly and helpful staff.
