About the hotel
The Bell House is one of the most attractive small hotels in the West Country. The original house is over 500 years old and stands in delightful English gardens. The Bell House makes an excellent base for exploring the Cotswolds.
The Bell House offers a non-smoking restaurant, as well as large gardens for al fresco dining. Wi-Fi is available in both the bar and restaurant areas. When England was under the influence of Oliver Cromwell all church services were banned and all church bells confiscated. The villagers of Sutton Benger hid the bell from the beautiful Saxon Church in the private house directly opposite. Hence, this is how the Bell House gained its name. The cities of Bath, Swindon and Bristol are all within a 20 minute drive and we are ideally situated for both the Castle Combe Race Track and Badminton Horse Trails. The surrounding area has a wealth of ancient sites, numerous white horses and the standing stones of Avebury. The famous beautiful villages of Castle Combe (Dr Dolittle) and Lacock (Harry Potter) are both within a ten minute drive.

A work in progress
Arrived late at the hotel and found the owner to be friendly and helpful.
He explained that they were doing the hotel up and I was in a room that hadn't been done up. Appears from other reviews that guests usually have this explained. Whilst it was good to hear he was aware that the room needed renovation, it was little comfort seeing as I was not in a renovated room.
The room was indeed very dated and needed total revamp. Bulbs gone in places - only one plug that worked - had to boil kettle on the floor as the cord didn't reach and scramble unde the bed if I needed to have anything else plugged in. There is no mirror in the actual room (or plug in bathroom where mirror was....obv) so getting ready in terms of drying and straightening my hair took some time as I had to do it blind, running back and forth to the bathroom to check in the mirror.
Bathroom was very old - shower was hand held off the bathroom taps and shower curtain pole tied up to the regular curtain pole with string to hold it up. Very stained bath which was very off putting. And toilet required several flushes to take paper away. Beds were incredibly hard as were pillows. Luckily I had a twin room so I ended up taking the quilt off the spare and laying that over the mattress to make it a little more bearable. Linen was nice though - white, cleans and soft. I had traveled down so that I didn't need to get up early - wanted to get as much sleep as poss for a long meeting ahead but was woken very early by what I assumed was a delivery in the kitchen?. Think it was under my room as I could hear banging and crashing constantly. Room was clean on face value but lots of dust etc on daydo rails and stained carpets- hard to keep such an old room clean though I imagine - it was acceptable.
All in all - a very impractical room for business stays. Could not get the wifi either. It was only £45 so I wasn't expecting a lot but still I think that it was not really up to the standard of a similar priced hotel.
