Top contemporary hotel which doesn't deptart from its traditional role as country town hotel
The Grosvenor Arms in Shaftesbury is a wonderful example of a contemporary hotel which blends seamlessly into the country town setting.
It doesn't so much transform the town as enhance its tradition as a local hub of social and business activity, as well as supporting tourist activity. Its central position places a huge responsibility on it, but it carries this off with great aplomb. It is the de facto meeting place for businessmen, friends and visitors. The layout of the hotel is unusual - almost quirky - but after you have oriented yourself and negotiated the missing and misleading signage, you will find a marvellous and generous use of space. So generous that there seems to be a whole dining room to the right of reception that is never used. The rooms are a delight and each is individually and thoughtfully designed. They are contemporary, but with sufficient classical input to prevent them dating in a few years time. I have stayed once in a lovely, if slightly cramped double (perfect for one) and once in a huge twin room, which was perfectly proportioned.
The restaurant, bar and terrace and arranged with interesting seating areas and again plenty of space. The bar itself is more functional than a place to sit and have a drink, and the service to some of the lounge areas can be a little slow. But the cheerful young staff usually manage to get there in the end. The restaurant menu reflects the hotel in that it is slightly quirky, but also innovative and at times inspired. I sometimes struggle to choose, and I wonder why the mains are served with no vegetables and the side dishes are then meals in themselves. Use of the wood oven is obviously good for pizzas, but I wonder about the wisdom of cooking marinated fish in it. Some dishes take on the aroma of wood smoke and the density of the heat better than others. Breakfast is excellent, wonderful choices and all very nicely presented.
