Reviews - Danubius Grand Hotel Margitsziget

Margitsziget , Budapest, 1138
The four-star Danubius Grand Hotel Margitsziget, built in 1873 on Margaret Island - the island of parks in the centre of Budapest - reflects the turn-of-century atmosphere of a hundred years ago.

The hotel is connected to the neighbouring Danubius Health Spa Resort Margitsziget by a heated underground corridor thus enable guests to benefit from the services of both hotels, A hot tub, 2 pools, and various saunas and beauty treatments can be enjoyed there.

The hotel is situated in the calm and picturesque surroundings of Margaret Island, yet in the heart of Budapest. The Széchenyi Restaurant offers fine dining with magnificent views of the park. Guests can enjoy free coffee and a croissant in the morning

A Soviet style hotel in need of modernisation
The hotel's only saving grace is the spa facilities which were invariably hogged by Russians. The cleanliness and style of the hotel needed much more attention, with my room was full of broken power points, the bath was a disgrace. For a capital city like Budapest needing tourists the hotel was hotel was not geared towards to mass tourism, with much of the staff unable to speak English.
The food however was passable, go to the next door hotel for dinner and listen to the Hungarian gypsy musicians.
The location of the hotel on an island can be a plus if you want to get away from the noise of a city, but you should visit the park next to the hotel and explore it as it has lots of statues.

Not quite gone to the dogs
A splendid, peaceful old hotel, a bit sombre and dowdy in its public places but great value as rates include use of the thermal pools. A great number of large dogs were also staying, a sight which may perturb some. The restaurant staff were a disappointment, and clearly needed some customer service skills, which was a shame. Other staff were efficient but seldom warm.

A marvellous rural retreat in the heart of Budapest but with some remnants of the Communist past!
An unique location, in a huge, car free, houseless, island park, a ten minute bus ride from the centre of this staggeringly beautiful city. If you prefer the exercise, either stroll along the river bank or wander through wonderfully mature woodland, drawn to your destination either by the excitement of the city or the restful atmosphere waiting you at the hotel. The hot and cold pools really do refresh and if you need a health check up, this is the place to do it. But, the food is rotten, the breakfast amongst the worst I have had anywhere, the dinner salad bar has had a previous life! Beware chipped glasses in the dining room. The bedrooms are large and I had a lovely balcony overlooking the river. (actually, the matresses sounded as if they had done long service but they were not uncomfortable. Please dont change them if it means the cost of a room can be kept as reasonable as it is. I cn live with a moderately squeeky matress)
This hotel has almost outgrown its Communist past, but not quite, but would recommend it wholeheartedly.
