Reviews - The Durham Ox

4Self Classified Inn Ratings explained
Westway, Crayke, , York, YO61 4TE
The Durham Ox is a traditional 300-year old pub, family owned for the last twelve years. We are situated in the historic village of Crayke, North Yorkshire, with breath-taking views over the vale of York on three sides, and a charming view up the hill to the medieval Church. Crayke is less than 25 minutes from York City Centre and in the heart of Herriot Country. The Durham Ox offers comfortable surroundings without recourse to trendy fixtures and fittings. The bar area has original flag stones on the floor and on the walls, oak panels fitted by the local woodcarver as well as a bar that bears his name still take pride of place. With a roaring fire alight in the inglenook fireplace in winter and an outside balcony for summer dining the pub oozes atmosphere. Five of the cottages are converted farm buildings. The two Junior Cottages offer a double room with en suite wet room, seating area, tea and coffee making facilities and H2K products. In addition the Large Cottage is spread over two floors with two large bedrooms, one double and one twin, with ensuite bathroom and separate shower, relaxed sitting room and a gallery kitchen. The Superior Suites are doubles with super king size beds and have bathrooms with a bath and separate shower. The Studio Suite is located above the pub and offers spacious luxury accommodation for two adults with 600sq feet of space, a super king bed, en suite bathroom, sofas, flat screen television, kitchen and honesty bar. A private dining area and sitting room for parties up to sixteen offers a comfortable yet smart additional dining option. Our new Barn room offers a fantastic venue for events up to a hundred guests. We are happy to create bespoke events in the Barn, which can also be used as a conference facility. The Durham Ox embraces the principle of good food in relaxed surroundings and we have always endeavoured to use the freshest and best of ingredients, bought locally.

Escape to the country
If you are looking for the perfect country inn with great accommodation, fantastic food and attentive staff - stop looking- you've found it. Having travelled to several places around the world, plus many in the UK there are only a handful I would see myself returning too, this is one of the few.
See you again soon.

Quality (go on treat yourself)
Studio room great.Great bed, great size, great kitchen, great view from outside area of room.Let down was in the bathroom(ie the tiling on the walls could do with more than small white tiles and the floor tiles are too slippy to be floor tiles so it can be like an ice skating rink!)Apart from this had a great time walking nearby, enjoying the surroundings, enjoying the hotel/pub and food.We were lucky too stay on a night when there was live music and this topped off a great stay. Will definitely be back.Look out for a night which has been reduced in price payed £70.00 and this was a bargain considering the overall quality of the place.

Excellent
Very comfortable room, though only complaint had to duck quite a lot of the time because under the eaves but not really that much of a problem because of the quality of everything. Bed luxurious, shower brilliant and everything we could need.

The Durham Ox Superb
A wonderful place to stay, cottage had everything we needed, both bedrooms where large and very comfortable.
Food in the restaurant was wonderful.
But the star of the weekend was the customer service, every member of staff we spoke to was very helpful, friendly, and courteous.

Simply excellent
The Durham Ox is an absolute gem. Every member of staff we met, made us feel really welcome and couldn't have been more accommodating. This pub has a lovely feel to it and I would recommend to anyone that wants to stay on a visit to York or surrounding areas.
