A little love
The hotelier is attempting to make this a cosy, welcoming and memorable place and is succeeding on all three. It without doubt needs an injection of money but for a place to lay your hat whilst visiting a beautiful and peaceful (in October) part of England, you would have a hard and long search for something that matches the value for money test better than this.
Don't expect the Ritz but then again I imagine the welcome is every bit as good. The town of Wiveliscombe is old but quant for it, and anywhere that is this small but still has two of its own breweries can't be that bad.

Lovely setting
The hotel was in a lovely setting with a good car park. The breakfast was of a high standard but the menu in the restaurant was restricted.
We were woken very early by a delivery van delivering across the road so we didn't have the best night's sleep.

Friendly service and good value
An interesting old building that is no longer in its prime, but provides pretty much what you need without having to pay a great deal. Good selection of real ales, friendly service, and good selection of food.

Good food but security is a real issue
On the plus side, the food was excellent. I had two breakfasts and an evening meal and, apart from the coffee being very weak, the food was really good.
When I returned to my room on the first evening I found that my room door had been left unlocked and that the dirty cups hadn't been changed, coffee/milk/sugar not replaced and the bin not emptied. Another couple had found their door propped open by a chair. When I asked what was happening I did get an apology and the cups were replaced, but I had to ask for more coffee for the room. My advice if you choose to stay here is that you ensure nothing of any value is left in your room.

we have stayed here before while visitng family. The last time we visited we couldn't dine here due to ventilation problems. This time i'm happy to say we could and did dine here to a really good meal, even though the menu and specials board was rather restricted for choice. The staff were attentive and quite pleasant. The only drawback for us was that there is no lift to the accomodation and two sets of steep stairs to climb with your luggage. Our room was over the kitchen area with the ventilation fans blowing and pidgeons on our windowsil waking us up. We would need to know next time that we had a better room and on a lower floor due to poor health
