Reviews - Solana Hotel

Gorg Borg Olivier Street , Mellieha, MLH1025
The Solana Hotel & Spa is a newly built 4-star hotel situated in the centre of the most northern village in Malta - Mellieha. The Hotel's façade finished in traditional Maltese Limestone, is a good introduction to the whole concept of this hotel - which blends very well with the dainty characteristics of this rural village. Moreover the Solana Hotel’s architectural characteristics and location were well thought in advance to cater for the leisure and the business traveller alike. The central location, the pretty comfortable rooms, the remarkable cleanliness & up keeping of the hotel, the professional but still friendly staff, the food, the leisure facilities, and the views from our terraces will not remain impressed as simple ‘comfort’ in our guests’ minds but much much more. We continuously strive to improve our hospitality, service and standards.

Average stay experience for a 4-star hotel.
Just came back from Malta and decided to leave a review about this hotel - Solana.
First comes the GOOD stuff: acceptable price for this time of year (October), nice room with mini kitchen, 2 pools - indoor and outdoor, kids playground inside, good service.
Now the BAD things: both pools are not heated, even though they say indoor pool is heated, jacuzzi inside is plain cold, so your kids will not be happy.
Breakfast is just fuc%^ing BORING, pardon me, but every morning they have the same shit over and over again - scrambled eggs, cereal, ham, porridge and baked beans plus some fruits (melons and grapes) - I would rate their breakfast as 1 out of 10. I would assume a 4-star hotel could afford to put a couple of cooks to make eggs to order and put some more food variety. We had only breakfasts, but I would think that dinners are the same.
Hotel is situated on a busy street with heavy bus traffic (= noise!), so choose higher floor (3rd) if your room is facing facing street or ask for a room facing inside (the view is not that good from the inside, and sun shines only in the morning, which is a good thing in summer).
There is a nice sandy beach situated about 2.5 kilometres DOWN the hill/road, so if you prefer walking this will be a hell of a workout on your way back :), you can also take a bus and ride a couple of stops. Bus stop is about 50 metres from the hotel. There is a church near by, also shops and restaurants. There are two food stores near the hotel (so-called "Supermarket" - about a size of a living room :) ), but I would recommend going to Shoppers and a grocery store about 200 metres up the street to get your food if you prefer to cook yourself.
A must go to Marsaxlokk on Sunday, go to "Matthew`s" restaurant - our final dinner there was excellent!

Short But Sweet
At reception everybody was very helpful and efficient. Our room although a little dated was fine for a short stay. The bathroom had everything we needed and all the little touches like including shower gel/shampoo freebies and also the kitchen had washing up liquid and a cloth (so often not part of the deal). Particularly I was impressed with the very comfortable divan bed .... again very often beds are so uncomfortable when travelling. The best bit for me was the hotel pool, although on the roof (which most are in Malta) it was much better than the other hotel's we stayed in which was generally very up market but did not have much space for sunbeds around the pool.

Nice place
Nice hotel, everything ok. Very big difference between staff. Some at the reception and in the restaurant were very unfriendly and unhelpfull, but most of the staff were friendly. We had booked a room for 4 adults, but when we arrived we got at normal double room with 2 extra beds. That meant, not at single sqare foot vacant in the room !!! We complained and after a while we got a fine room with the place needed. But I had to find my reservation which confirmed the booking, we had made. Cleaning staff extremely helpfull and friendly.

excellent value for money
Very nice, friendly, well located hotel. I liked a lot the indoor and outdoor pools.
Breakfast was great (i am always very demanding with this part)
Reception gave us tips on what to do in the iland and helped us to book tours, taxis etc.
There is a bus stop in front of the hotel which is very convenient. Lots o restaurants nearby and close to one of the sandy beaches.
