Reviews - Emperador

GRAN VIA 53, MADRID, 28013
The attractive Hotel Emperador is ideally situated in the centre of Madrid, on the famous Gran Vía, one of the most important avenues of the Spanish capital. The rooms have a classic design with unobtrusive elegance and the features of the hotel include a rooftop terrace with pool, hot tub, bar and wonderful views of the city and the Royal Palace, which can be reached within a 5-minute walk only. Other attractions such as Puerta del Sol, Plaza de España, Plaza Mayor or the Almudena Cathedral are within a short stroll. A perfect place to explore and discover Madrid.

Emperador in July '13
Great central location with a great decent-sized roof-top pool to help you cool off after tramping round the galleries or shopping in the Castillian heat!
I had booked a standard room but was told this would be at the back of the hotel - I then queried the cost of a Club room and was quoited an additional 35 euros a night, however, I'd previously emailed the hotel and been quoted 15 euros in writing - when I pointed this out to the receptionist and showed her the email still on my mobile they honoured the lower price!
Two words of warning though - the rates don't include VAT at 10% and the Club 'lounge' is a dark curtained off section of the breakfast room with no natural light and a very poorly stocked bar and just a few nuts and crisps as freebies! Maybe worth paying the extra for a better room but certainly not for the lounge facilities!!

Superb Location
Right in the heart of Madrid, could walk easily to all main attractions. Superb roof-top pool. Small windowless gymnasium in basement. Clean. Would definitely stay here again due to the location, pool and cost.

Disappointment
Because we were staying four nights we had hoped for a good room; in fact our room was small but it was also dark. We needed electric lights all the time because it's window gave onto a dark well, so no daylight was received. Consequently the accommodation was not value for money. In addition we were surprised to be charged 4euros to use wifi for 30 mins. The public areas were smart but not particularly comfortable to sit and read quietly given that our rom was so small and dark. We would not recommend this hotel at the price paid.
