Appearance wonderful, functionality dismal!
I booked for a 4-night stay, and checked out after 3 nights but, because I had booked through LateRooms, I was refused a refund on the untaken night.
My reason for checking out? The cleanliness and decor are first rate, but the room layout and the bathroom facilities have not been thought out for benefit of guests.
On arrival, I was given a courtyard room, which was of dolls house proportions resulting in sleepless claustrophobia. Small double bed, miniscule television on the wall, one wall was the front door (with doormat!) and window, and curtained from floor to ceiling and full width - it felt like an overdecorated prison cell! The shower was ridiculous - fixed head seven feet above the shower tray which made it impossible to wash my hair, and the cubicle so small it could only be used by remaining upright. One power point, but on the other side of the room from the kettle which meant boiling it on the bedside table. Next morning, I asked for a change of room and had to push quite hard to achieve the offer of the room upstairs from the dolls house. Much bigger room, beautifully appointed, although the dressing table wasn't actually under the mirror. At my insistance, this room boasted a bathroom with a hand-held shower (in addition to the fixed head above it). But, the shower was a dribble which actually stopped altogether at critical moments. Again, the shower cubicle was too small and there was nowhere to put shower gel, shampoo etc - except for a fixed soap dish too high up on the wall to reach easily. The staircase up to the room was absolutely lethal, as I discovered when I tried to take my luggage down on check-out - very steep, with the top step outside the room too narrow to stand on carrying anything larger than a vanity case.
However, breakfast was freshly cooked - although I have never been served toast before the porridge before, and the tea never did get strong enough to drink (and I do not require builders tea anyway!).
I have stayed here before and benefited from a room in the main house at that time, with a proper walk-in shower and although the room was small, it was very comfortable. I was told that other guests had booked for a week (as had I) but had been allocated rooms in the main house; I can only assume that I was allocated the dolls house because I wanted a double room, although travelling alone.
My previous experience encouraged me to think of the Cricket Field Hotel as the best B&B as the world and recommend it to my friends and family as such. Not any more! I will never stay there again, to the point that I will go back to using a national chain - no character but at least you know what you're getting and the standards are pretty consistent.

ManagementResponse

We are very sorry that this guest did not enjoy her last stay. However, for any seasoned traveller we hope they would see the reason for such a review. Right at the bottom she states she has stayed before and thought we were the best B&B in Salisbury. Nothing has changed . Our rooms are the same both in cleanliness decor and layout. We firmly believe this review is based purely on our insistence that the room was paid for under the conditions of our cancellation policy. Which has led to much bitterness on her part.

Excellent accomodation
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our 2 night stay and thought the breakfasts were excellent. The only complaint was that the room was very cold on our first night, as if nobody had been in the room for a while, but by the 2nd night it was fine. Would definately recommend Cricketfield House.

wonderful stay
I checked the hotel on the internet together with the comments from previous guests and I can say that everything was as stated. The room was spacious. The facilities were all that was required. Breakfast excellent. The staff were so helpful. Arrived late due to traffic problems from the north of England but there was a welcoming letter and maps telling us the way into the centre of town and also the places to eat. Would not hesitate to recommend this accommodation.

Excellent accommodation with outstanding service
The hosts were welcoming, most attentive and helpful, providing very useful advice on parking in Salisbury and local restaurants. Breakfast was outstanding, with a remarkable choice and some of the best service I have had anywhere in a long time. Parking was free and on site. The only reason I have not given the room a 6 rating is that one of the chairs had splits in the upholstery and the fan in the bathroom was rather noisy - not showstoppers but not quite top notch. But taken as a whole, a great place to stay and highly recommended.

we arrived slightly early but this was no problem, the room was ready for us. The owners were on holiday and the lady covering couldn't be more helpful. She advised us where to park the car in Salisbury and get something to eat. The breakfast was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. It is certainly a place that we would recommend and be happy to go back to.
