Great location - but

The hotel is in a great location being on the banks of the river just a short 10 min walk from the town centre.

During our stay the rooms were in the process of being upgraded. Why they didn't replace the baths for walk in showers is a mystery considering the amount of elderly visitors who use the hotel as part of coach trips etc. Staff were helpful and cheery and supplied us with a fan for our room as it was very hot and humid during our stay. The help yourself breakfast had a large choice of english breakfast fare with cerials, toast, breads and fruits on offer. The trays of scram egg, beans and bacon were replenished as needed and fried or poached eggs could be made fresh if required. Cannot fault the breakfast or wating staff. What lets this hotel down is the design of the ground floor. The first rooms start just through from reception where there is regular coming and going from staff and people heading to other rooms. Opposite the first few rooms are the toilets for people using the bar/lounge areas. Further round where the rooms over look the river, there is a balcony right next to and below a few rooms which is used by people having a drink and/or smoking while chatting. Anybody planning an early night better keep their windows closed to reduce the noise which can still be heard till the bar closes. The other rooms to the rear of the hotel do not fare any better on the ground floor. These rooms are right next the road- I am talking six feet away here. There is only a pavement separating you and you window from passing buses and cars etc which was quiet most of the night after around 11pm, started up again around 5-30 as people made their way to work. You could see peoples head and shoulders as they passed the window- not what I expected from a hotel in this price bracket. The finishing of paint and floor covering in our toilet could have been to a better standard with rusty bath handles spoiling the look too. Rooms were clean and fresh towels supplied daily. Coffee and tea facility's were on offer but the tv kept freezing up on several channels making viewing a waste of time. We had a pleasant visit and would use the hotel again only if it was through a cheap deal or special offer. It is not a £100 a night hotel by any means. and can only guess the location is the reason for the price point. Great location, great staff. great breakfast, rooms need a bit more work on the finishing of paint and fittings etc. The holes in the curtains mentioned in a previous post, are actually holes in the rubberised blackout backing on the curtains. When the curtains are closed it looks like holes where the light is able to shine through. Yep- would use the hotel again because of its location, but only if on special offer and offered a room above ground floor.

A comfortable hotel by the river

We were very impressed by this hotel, which was clean and comfortable.

The staff were extremely helpful and efficient. The food was excellent, although the scrambled eggs were disappointingly watery and tasteless. The only problem was the noise from the party-goers the other side of the river, which the hotel wouldn't be able to do anything about. I would definitely go back there.

Overpriced and average

Average room - overpriced because of the races.

It was very busy in the city and finding accommodation was difficult. The following night the hotel room was half the price which was a much fairer reflection. Insufficient tea and coffee choice and no toiletries bar some shower gel.

The shower itself was cramped and under a sloping roof which meant showering with my head bowed in order not to bang it on the ceiling. In fact the shower curtain only came half across the bath. Not satisfactory.

All in all, rather disappointing and poor value for money at £120+

Overpriced

Very basic accommodation in need of updating.

Highly overpriced for what it is. No air conditioning and very little air circulating in the building. Staff are helpful and nice but obviously constrained by poor management decisions. The lift stank and no one cleaned it for the entire time we stayed there; like something from a drug den, the floors were sticky and filthy. Disappointing.

The Queens Hotel

The room was so hot we tried to get a fan from reception but they had all gone.

Air con would be great. Staff were very friendly.

The Queens Hotel

Very comfortable one night stay.

Great central location and next to the river. Decent hot breakfast despite it being from the hotplate. Staff friendly, helpful, and efficient.

Good place to stay in the middle of York

We only stayed one night, without breakfast, bathed a positive experience.

The staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful. There was some noise drifted in through our open window from a nearby bar, but not sufficient to disturb our sleep. The room itself was clean and comfortable. The hotel is ideally placed for seeing the city, and the opportunity to park a car inter car park (though not when the river is high!) is a real bonus.

The Queens Hotel

We only had breakfast in the hotel, so I can't comment on evening meals.

Dissappointed

Expected far better.

Previous reviews I read gave a good rating so thought it would be fine because only staying overnight, but, the walls had dirty marks and stains on them, the radiator was dirty, lampshades had stains and some was in disrepair. Reception staff I thought quite curt. I know York is a very busy tourist town and they must have a large turnover of quests, but this is one guest that will find alternative accommodation when returning to York in the future.

Convenient location, a little expensive for what it is.

Staff friendly and helpful, food reasonable and plentiful, there are a lot of good things about this hotel.

For over £100 a night, I might have expected something a little more special, but that's what you get for being in a popular tourist city, I guess.
