A good, near to city centre hotel.
I wasn't expecting 5 star luxury as I didn't pay for it but what I got was a good, comfortable very conveniently located hotel.
The room was comfortable, if a little too hot, the beds were clean and I had a good night's sleep. The bathroom was a good size and really the only criticism was that the shower head didn't allow much water to come out. The breakfast was varied and there was plenty of it. The price I paid was very good value compared to other conveniently situated hotels. I would definitely stay here again.
My daughter and I were stopping for one night as she had an interview at Cambridge.
We managed to get a half price deal. If we had paid full price I would definitely have been very disappointed. Our room was overlooking the main road and it was noisy for most of the night. The room was also very hot despite our turning off the radiator but because of the road we didn't open. Otherwise the place was friendly, clean and breakfast was good.
Great placed hotel
Great hotel perfectly located.
Room was big but bathroom abit fired. Super friendly staff. Would stay again
breakfast room service delivered earlier than booked plus two errors in the clear order
The room was tiny and overlooking building work with no blinds, no net curtains, The window had to be left open propped up on a stick, thus it was broken, the bathroom light kept flashing on and off like a torture cell.
After checking in I had a short time before my university appointment so could not call for the bulb change until leaving at the reception. It was changed by my return so the receptionist acted accordingly. It took several repeats to explain I wanted breakfast room service especially as the room was a long walk and a floor away. Eventually on my return at 9.30 pm the receptionist responded to the request for a breakfast order. Not even eggs just cereal, fruit, yoghurt and toast. She later acknowledged my ring of each choice was clear but the delivery was ten minutes before the agreed time / I was still sleepy so did not check every detail. I had to sign but despite the clear request for wholemeal toast and honey, the serving delivered cheap sliced white bread and a mound of dodgy purple jam. So the kitchen does not even know what honey is nor wholemeal bread-(what they delivered was inedible) - all for a room costing about £130 plus £10 for 'cooked' breakfast only downstairs and £3 room service. At least the receptionist, on my checking out, agreed my order had been clear and would inform the kitchen. I was reimbursed only the £3 not the breakfast which downstairs would have meant more than muesli, melon slices and tea. Thus the breakfast was the utter minimum for a hotel that cost more than a US luxury washington hotel let alone much more than a cheap motorway b and b.
Pleased to be back
I am a regular guest at the Royal Cambridge and having been forced to stay somewhere else for a couple of nights I really appreciated my stay at the Royal Cambridge this time.
I noticed with approval the large airy bedroom with its elegant Georgian window, the spacious, sparkling bathroom with a proper bath tub (not just a shower) and the pristine white bedding with a duvet that was light but incredibly warm. The Royal Cambridge feels relaxed but civilized, old-fashioned meaning the best of the past - real service and quality - not that modern commercial short-cut feel you get in newer hotels. The desk was well-equipped with a nearby plug point for a laptop and of course, there is the invaluable free fast wi-fi connection for the business traveller. The pictures on the wall are tasteful, the decor is pleasant, and I personally love the slight smell of toast that permeates the corridors. It makes it feel like a home away from home. I am looking forward to my next stay in a few days time.
Seen better days
The Hotel was quite tatty, there was a lot of road noise, the staff were not overly polite, the bar was closed early on a Friday night (although you could still get a drink), and it was over-priced for what it was.
Extra for parking, extra for breakfast - both of which should have been included in the room rate considering the price.
Lovely location but that's about it.
turned away at breakfast even though had paid extra through booking site and then on top of room rate they gun you down on car parking!!!
1st room the door wouldnt open fully as it hit the bed! All rooms v tired and need of refurbishment
Bedrooms small, old, need refurbishing.
Staff very few around but polite and helpful. 1st room given door hit bed when door opened to go in room. Did not fully open..Single glazed windows so cold despite radiator on.
Second room not much better. But we had paid so decided to stay. It was only 1 night thank goodness. Never again....
Needs vast improvements - great location but nothing else great about it!
Because of its great location it seems the hotel doesn't think it needs to worry about anything else.
The room was warm and clean but very basic and very small. Do not pay extra for breakfast, probably the worst breakfast I've ever had!
This hotel is very over priced for what you actually get for your money.
It is one of the most expensive hotels in Cambridge and my expectations were disappointed. The staff are courteous, friendly and helpful but the rooms are somewhat out dated. There is a lso a hefty daily charge for car parking on top of the high price of the hotel. Other hotels in Cambridge offer better value for money.
