Very Poor service
Catalogue of disasters from checking in.
Check in was over an hour later than expected as room wasn't ready. Room was tiny and above a noisy wedding next to staff quarters. Drinks in bar were served in dirty glasses 3 times in a row to the point of embarrassment by the bar staff. Card machine was broken on check out so check out delayed. Came out side to find drivers side of car covered in blood as there had been a fight on the car park during the night. A shame really as place is lovely and the staff were lovely too, just absolutely run off their feet as very under staffed.
The hotel was clean and tidy breakfast good.
Tried to get a bar meal for which I think they are not geared up for. Staff very good. Nice big car park which was very handy. The plus side it was a very quite.
If you like old hotels with loads of character you will like The Old Swan.
It was warm, comfortable and well placed for visiting Harrogate. You do need to remember to book evening meals or afternoon teas at the time of reserving your room, they are popular and allocated on a first come first served basis.
Our stay at The Old Swan was one of the best hotel stays we've had in the UK.
I wish we'd had time to stay longer.
Swan needs revival (Good in 1984)
We stayed here due to nostalgia, the staff we're kind and helpful but would not choose to use this hotel again.
Lovely room, comfortable bed.
Bath robe and slippers due to being an upgrade room. Problem with a cold radiator and although it couldn't be fixed immediately we were provided with an excellent electric fire. The radiator was fixed the next day. Bar meal was excellent and the breakfast was very good as was the service.
Old Swan Hotel
Room OK, but only a small double bed.
Have had better breakfasts.
A bleak breakfast
This is a joint response from myself and my wife.
We both stayed at this hotel which, as the scores show, is generally very good. Our one area of concern was the real but potentially soluble problem of breakfast service. It seemed to us that there was insufficient staff on duty to meet the high demand and no visible overall managerial direction of those who were on duty. The available staff were clearly very committed but under considerable pressure and urgently in need of additional support. The situation was reflected in a high number of uncleared tables, a shortage of some basics which were either not replaced or could not be replaced ('I'm afraid we've run out of marmalade but there is strawberry jam, honey and nutella'), and some 'interesting' responses to other queries ('No spoons on the table. Oh, you must be sitting at an uncleared table.' Oh, you are not sitting at an uncleared table? In that case, the spoons must have been taken by other guests'). We did not think the breakfast experience acceptable in a 4 star establishment and were puzzled because the rest of the hotel's provision is good. Several guests told us that criticism of breakfast provision is a leit motif of customer reviews so why, if this is the case, is nothing apparently being done. Most guests give advanced notice of their stay, so numbers can be projected in advance. And can a hotel really 'run out of marmalade'. And if the answer to this question is really 'yes', couldn't someone be found to nip out to the corner shop rather than bring forward the tea menu?
A night away in harrogate
Firstly a nice 3.5/4 star hotel with attentive staff and pleasant public rooms.
I booked two executive rooms for two couples, allocated 157 and 158, nice big rooms on the side but any hotel should provide a good nights sleep and this I'm afraid fell down on room heat comfort. On a warm but not hot May night the room was hot and stuffy. Window opening was severely restricted I guess for security reasons, but even when opened max with the heavy curtains drawn the ventilation was almost non existent. Why the rooms were so poorly ventilated and hot whilst all other public areas were normal I do not know.
Overnight in Harrogate
As repeat customers we chose to stay at The Old Swan again, having enjoyed our previous stay.
Classy, without being pretentious and ideally situated for access to the central shopping area of Harrogate. Staff were friendly and helpful at all times. The dining room is spacious and well set out for a semi-buffet style breakfast; full English being ordered and brought to the table. Hope to stay there again sometime.
