Reviews - White Lion Royal Hotel

4Visit Wales Assessed Inn Ratings explained
61 HIGH STREET , BALA, LL23 7AE
The White Lion Royal Hote is located in the centre of town, (renovated june 05) this 4 STAR WTB and AA INN offers comfortable rooms and great breakfasts. It is convenient for all the recreational amenities (leisure centre, swimming pool) and outdoor activities (wind surfing, white water rafting, golf, rambling) offered in Bala. It is just a five minute walk from Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake), or a thirty minute drive to the coast.

All rooms are en-suite and have DVD TV's plus tea and coffee facilities. This is the best known of all the hotels and inns in Bala, with its central and prominent position on the main street. Its origins as a hotel are unknown but the tablet above the front door proclaims that the present building (with some alterations) has been there since 1759.George Borrow (famous Welsh writer 1803-1881) stayed during his travels through the area and penned his famous book entitled Wild Wales. It is no wonder that he returned here when we read his account of the breakfast that was served to him:What a breakfast! Pot of hare ditto of trout pot of prepared shrimps dish of plain shrimps tin of sardines beautiful beefstake eggs muffin large loaf, and butter, not forgetting capital tea. Queen Victoria came to Bala in 1889 and during her stay at the Robertsons country seat at Pale, Llandderfel, a few miles east of the town she purchased goods in three shops, and as a result they were granted permission to call themselves Purveyors by Royal Warrant.

The main bar is a popular haunt of locals and tourists and hosts occasional traditional music performances. The snug BAR is one of the smallest bars in Wales dating from the hotel's days as a posting house and is also popular with locals. The structure of the building is similar to that as described by George Borrow.

Good value for money. Excellent position in centre of Bala with parking. Good 'pub style' food served all day, breakfast was excellent. Good service throughout stay. Would stay here again. Only drawback was no lift which is a bit of a bind if your on the top floor.

Excellent hotel at superb price
The hotel is located in the middle of the high street, making it easy to find and close to local shops and attractions. There is a large walled car park, which seemed nice and safe. The staff were friendly throughout my stay. Despite only being a single room there was plenty of room and the bathroom was huge. It was clean and comfortable with good quality amenities, i.e. good sized TV to watch the football in the evenings. There was a good selection of cereal and cooked breakfasts along with other meals available throughout the day. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay in the area and will probably be going back there myself.

Nice hotel
Only stayed for the one night, but found it to be very nice. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was lovely. Room was nice and clear, however, it was a single which had the bathroom en-suite area in the corner of the room. A bit off putting but I managed to cope ;-)

excellent value for money hotel in the centre of town let down by a dried up breakfast , it was cooked and left standing for someone to come down instead of being fresh .

great value for money
Good 'Pub' type hotel. Great breakfasts, friendly and welcoming staff. Bar could do with extra staff, poor woman was run off her feet, trying to serve in the bar, and check in guests. she kept smiling though even as the queue built up! Very extensive menu of pub style food, well presented, and good quality. For the price I paid (£25 per night for B&B) i really could not complain about anything. Friendly and great value for money.

Overnight stay at White Lion Hotel, Bala
Very helpful management and staff.
Room was clean and adequate, no sound insulation to windows which fronted main street at night.
Would stay again if could choose room.

Great value
Great value for the price paid. Nice room, great bathroom and tv. Common areas....stairways and bar and restaurant look a bit tired. Food was good but a Brains pub that has no draft beer on. That could be a lot better.
