Reviews - The Original Raj Hotel

3Self Classified Hotel Ratings explained
6 West Coates , Edinburgh, EH12 5JG
The Original Raj Hotel in Edinburgh is the UK's first Indian themed hotel. Opened by Lady Shakira Caine in Spring 2000, as the name suggests the hotel aims to conjure up the images of elegance and opulence of days gone by.The hotel is situated approx.1 mile from the City Centre, on the main airport road. The Hotel does not have a private car-park but metered parking (mon-fri 0830-1730) is available in neighbouring side streets of Hotel.A selection of soft drinks is available as part of room service. This hotel appeals to guests who are looking for something genuinely different which is well located for the Centre of Edinburgh at reasonable prices.

Bedrooms are en-suite, spacious, clean and modern with a traditional Indian theme. They are individually decorated in different colours to convey a warm and peaceful atmosphere to our guests. Our hotel is close to the centre of Edinburgh and perfect for families, independent and business travellers or anyone looking for a peaceful and quiet, affordable hotel. The Original Raj Hotel is owned by celebrity chef and entrepreneur Tommy Miah who also owns the well-known Raj Restaurant on The Shore in Leith, as well as The Tommy Miah's Raj Hotel in London.

The hotel furnishings are of Indian hardwood, handmade in Jaipur from recycled Australian railway sleepers.

great hotel!
I really liked this hotel, they where very help with all my questions and helped when I had a problem with a tour group. the only thing was that my side of the bed was very creaky but it didn't disturb my sleep because we had very packed days. breakfast for perfect, the atmosphere and decorations where wonderful and perfect distance to the city centre and zoo!!!

A mixed review for the Raj Hotel
For what you pay the Raj Hotel isn't too bad and for a short city break it offers a comfortable stay. Its within easy walking distance to the city centre and with a bus stop right outside its no problem getting around.
Good points to the Raj: Room was clean and tidy. When spoken to the staff were helpful and polite. The basic breakfast was adequate to set you up for the day.
Not so good points to the Raj: Staff could really work on their customer service skills to make guests feel more welcome. Although the bed in our room was made each day and the bin emptied and changed we were not given fresh towels each day and had to ask a member of staff for more toilet paper when the one roll we were given ran out. On one of the nights during our stay some guests stayed in the room next door luckily it must have been unoccupied the previous nights as it quickly became apparent that the walls are very thin! so if you are a light sleeper and do not enjoying people singing when they return from the pub on a Saturday night this is not the hotel for you. Also with no car park at the Raj it offers little for those who drive.
Having been our first stay in a hotel in Edinburgh I would not stay at the Raj Hotel again. Next time we would pay a little bit more money for somewhere with better customer service, better room service/laundry service, a more varied choice of breakfast, better sound proofing in the rooms and a car park.

The Raj
Nice friendly hotel, easy access from Haymarket and bus stop pretty much outside.Friendly layed back staff and nicely done rooms. If you want something different from bland chains and sterile rooms then i would recommend the Raj.

Not especially friendly
I booked 2 rooms identifying 2 teenage children and 2 adults but one room was on the ground floor and the other on the top floor. The staff were reasonably unhelpful and did not want to talk to us when they were on the internet. At breakfast we were told we had to move our own plates etc so we could sit together because all tables were set for 2. The furniture and atmosphere is cute but didn't make up for relatively unfriendly reception.

An unsual hotel, but in a good area for city centre
Stayed at this hotel for 1 night thank goodness as that was enough for me. Although room was large and unusual because of its theme, however staff very unwelcoming and abrupt the only person actually speaking to us during our stay was the gardener when leaving! The whole hotel needs a good clean. Breakfast was the worst I have ever had, the offer they had given advertised a breakfast however did not state that it would just be cereal, processed 'cheese' slices and bread! Also concerned that our room had patio doors that were locked and no key given surely this is a health and safety fire hazard . Therefore would not return to this hotel.
