3AA Assessed Hotel Ratings explained
1 Wallingford Road, North Stoke , Wallingford, OX10 6BE
Constructed in 1874 and set in 133 acres of parkland, The Springs is a fine example of a Victorian Tudor style country house. The elegant reception halls still retain all their period features such as oak panelling, beams and stone fireplaces where you will be welcomed with crackling log fires through the winter months. Nearly all the bedrooms have recently been refurbished in neutral colours with modern white bathroom suites and many have balconies and enjoy picturesque views across the lake and beautifully manicured grounds. All rooms are non-smoking. The award winning AA Rosette Lakeside Restaurant serves excellent cuisine. Only the finest freshly sourced ingredients are used so the menu is updated daily. As the name suggests, the restaurant enjoys wonderful views across the lake through attractive floor to ceiling latticed windows. The hotel offers golf, weddings, conference and banqueting facilities. Also on site, there is a putting green, croquet lawn, coarse fishing on the River Thames, sauna and outdoor pool. The pool was installed by former owner rock star, Ian Gillan, from the band Deep Purple) and is often commented on by guests for its quirky design in the shape of a guitar. Located amidst the rural and peaceful setting of the Thames Valley countryside, historic market towns such as Wallingford, Henley, Abingdon and Dorchester are all close by. Other places of interest are Oxford, Windsor, the Cotswolds, Blenheim Palace and Basildon Park.

A great stay
All staff were extremely welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. Room was good, with a view over the gardens and lake. Decoration throughout the hotel was fitting with a country hotel. The Lakeside restaurant was outstanding! Food was excellent and great value! We aren't into golf and although it is a Hotel and Golf Club it really didn't matter that we didn't partake in the golfing activities.

Late arrival.
This hotel is part of an overall golfing club and appears to be quite old in parts. It over looks the club house and presumably the 18th Green (not a golfer!). The room although appeared to be approaching need for a revamp was clean and comfortable, the bathroom looked a lot more modern and equipped with all the necessities.
Due to my late arrival (after 9pm) i ate in the bar from a very varied menu, and food arrived prompt and was of great quality and value. I did have to chase some one to serve me but that again was probably due to teh late hour I got in the bar. I was offered the choice of the resturant or the bar so that was also a point in their favour.
Brekfast was excellent and a full range of items were available and the food I ordered came freshly cooked and of excellent value.

Old school golf hotel
Pleasant place for an overnight stay. The rooms are clean and spacious. Hot water took a while to come through and the decor is definitely dated, with a bit of a mish-mash of materials and styles in the rooms. Breakfast was generous and nicely presented, and the staff were pleasant and courteous. I had a comfortable stay and slept well.

Staff Are Superb
I dont normally bother with writing a review but i thought that would be unfair to the hotel on this occasion. Could not fault the place and it is excellent value for money, I paid £80 for a twin room including breakfast, bargain. Staff are really friendly and polite and cant do enough for you. Whenever I am working in the area again, this will be my first choice every time.

A short impromptu break at The Springs
Having booked for one night we were delighted to find that there were, contrary to website indications, two doubles available for a second night and from which we chose our favourite. I assume that given that a wedding was organized for the Saturday afternoon and evening, and that juggling the rooms was becoming a necessity or that the management wished to give us as peaceful stay as possible, we were delighted to be upgraded to a superior room further from the centre of festivities.
The tranquility of the setting, the view over the lake and general comfort were a real tonic to us older folk. There was some disturbance during the second night due to noisy drunken revellers, but this was short-lived and hardly the fault of the hotel staff who, it must be said, remained calm and polite on the evening of the wedding which ran over into the scheduled time for dinner!
The only shortcoming which we could point out would be the lack of an offer of assistance with our bags to our room. That apart, it was a splendid experience in outstanding surroundings. Thank you.

We had the Henley room, which had french doors leading out onto the swimming pool area. It was spacious and clean. The beds were just wonderful- very comfortable.
While the food was good, the atmosphere in the dining area and the reception lounge was a little sterile. Lovely views over the grounds and lake though.
