Reviews - The George and Dragon Hotel

4Self Classified Inn Ratings explained
Market Place, Kirkbymoorside, , York, YO62 6AA
The George and Dragon Hotel is a very unique place, created by combining the original 17th Century Coaching Inn with the adjoining rectory and corn mill to make a 20-bedroomed hotel of real charm, a haven of hospitality in the sleepy market town of Kirkbymoorside ("church by the moor"). David & Alison Nicholas have dedicated themselves to restoring this delightful Coaching Inn with a sympathetic refurbishment of the bar, bistro & now stylish contemporary restaurant, all of which are most welcoming and comfortable. The perfect place to meet, relax, unwind, eat and drink, we offer modern English cuisine with some traditional old favourites. There is a bar menu, a la carte and blackboard specials too, as well as a Sunday carvery. Ideally situated between Helmsley and Pickering in the heart of the North York Moors National Park. Rich in history, heritage and beauty, the George and Dragon has a real 'olde English' pub atmosphere which is hard to find nowadays. Serving top-quality food, local real ales and a great selection of wines. With bar, bistro, fine restaurant and 20 ensuite bedrooms, it is the perfect retreat from the 'hustle & bustle' of everyday life. All bedrooms are very individual; some are on the ground floor, others accessed by stairs, some have baths others have showers. Wi-Fi is available FREE

regular late rooms user
The evening meal was excellent. A lower score for the food due to the standard of the breakfast. Was looking forward to this after the wonderful evening meal . Items missing From the order. What came did not taste or look freshly prepared. Requested hot water to make own tea. This never came. Ok if you drink coffee plenty of that on offer have stayed at better accommodation for less money. .

The room had a very fusty smell even when the window had been left open all night. Decoration very drab.
Quality of soap (one tiny little piece for two people for both sink and shower) very poor.
Not a good shower, water temperature fluctuated from bath tap mixer.
Only enough milk for one cup of tea each if you like it milky.

Second stay at the George and Dragon
A very warm welcome by Chris and the rest of the staff at the G&D. Stayed in room 22 across the courtyard which was huge! Enormous double bed and lots of storage space in the room and corridor. Which had the double wardrobe and safe. Food at the restaurant was once again amazing! Congrats to Chef! As was the breakfast on Sunday. Once again would Thoroughly recommend to all travellers - spoil yourselves. You will not be disappointed !

I booked a superior twin room which bore no resemblance to what is shown on the web page. I feel that the price charged is grossly far to high, certainly not value for money.not recommended.

The room lacked character; the shower door didn't close properly. Could hear the guests in the room above moving about;

Whilst I have ticked No to would you stay again, I would stay again but it would have to be discussed in depth about the accommodation. I do not think that it is worthy of its 4* rating, from speaking to other guests the beds are extremely Tired and well past their use by date.

Great pub
Lovely place to stay, very friendly staff, food was fantastic. Shame there's nothing else in the village. Nearest nice place is Helmsley.
