It could be a great place to stay
We have stayed at the Red Lion several times before. It was beautifully updated a couple of years ago. The rooms [we have stayed in two different ones] are very comfortable, modern but still with character. However, this visit the atmosphere has changed. On arrival, even before my husband had a chance to put his bag down, he was asked to pay in full for our entire 3 night visit. Whereas before, the bar and restaurant were busy with guests and locals and really buzzy, this time we didn't notice anyone else staying and the place was practically deserted. We ate in the bar on two evenings and the food was delicious home cooking. Sadly breakfast isn't available but there is an arrangement to have it at the deli over the road - which is a lovely friendly place with an excellent range of foodstuffs on sale, as well as a tiny cafe. However, no-one in the hotel told us that the minimum cost per person was £7, rather than what the deli would charge if you walked in off the street for the same thing. Because the hotel told the deli we would be coming for breakfast, we could not pay the deli direct, but were charged by the hotel. £7 for a bacon sarnie [which was delicious] is a little steep.
Come on Red Lion, you have a great place but it's lost it's heart. You need to have a manager who takes an interest in the staff and the guests, instead of not answering the phone when a member of staff tries to make contact on several occasions with queries. Make sure that the guest rooms are cleaned & the beds made every day. Light the fire instead of having old dead ashes in the grate when it's a cold winter night. Make the locals feel welcome. Get back what you had only a year or two back - it can't all be blamed on the recession.
