We paid £95 for one night.
We we're told about the noise above the "bar" and we thought it was ok. It's more like a club the music is that loud, the bass was moving the bed. The room was a lot smaller than advertised online too. There was a note on the bed saying we we're charged a reduced rate because of the noise and the fun run the next day but that's not true. £95 for a box room. With no sleep
The staff were great...
from reception to the dining room. The one negative is that lots of rooms (including ours) are facing the road which means that there is a lot of noise. Either take ear plugs or ask for a different room...
Great place to stay, highly recommend.
Great hotel, very enjoyable night stay.
We were advised prior to arrival that we may hear noise in our room from the bar until late, although you could hear the music it was no different to having the window open in a city center hotel. Will be staying here again for sure!
November 2014 Royal Hotel
I only ate breakfast there but it was extremely good with plenty of food choices including pastries.
It was nice and hot, there are plenty of choice with coffee types etc. quality ingredients , well cooked. The hotel is handy if you are working in the sutton coldfield or even birmingham and lichfield areas as the train station is only a few minutes walk from the hotel. There is no lift though and stairs have to be negotiated but staff were more than willing to carry bags upstairs etc and me being little old lady they put me in a room as far away from public areas as possible to ensure a quiet night.
Ask for a quiet room !!
I stayed at this hotel as it was quite near to The Belfry where I had to attend a work function. My main comment about The Royal Hotel would be that if you stay on a Friday night you need to ask for a room well away from the noise of the live bands that play until 3am !.
To be fair to the very helpful receptionist who was on duty when I checked in, she did say that there was a late bar on that evening. It might have been better to say that there was live music that went on until 3am. Not great being able to hear the thud of the drums until that time in the morning. Apart from this the rest of the stay was ok and the newly refurbished bar where you have breakfast was very well laid out. Helpful staff and great coffee too.
Dont Ignore The Advice About The Noise And You Will Enjoy Your Stay
Stayed here on Saturday night 16/8, had been made aware of noise levels due to live music it wasnt something they tried to hide and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay, central location , friendly staff, clean room and a fantastic live band called Junction, this isnt the place for a quiet stay or an early night but I will definately be back.
Good location but poor value
I was working for a day in Sutton Coldfield and the hotel was 3 mins from the station and 2 mins from where I was working, so the location was fantastic.
However, my room was very poor value, particularly considering it was more than the prestigious Malmaison in central Birmingham. I booked the executive room, and there was little executive about it - by the main road so very noisy, but more to the point there was no cupboard for hanging clothes, no desk for working on, and a very uncomfortable and thin mattress. However, the staff were very friendly and it was a pub downstairs so the food was cheap and for that you got standard pub grub which is fine for the price.
the room had character but was lacking in storage space almost everything stayed in one's case.
Some low ceilings, albeit one warning notice, but I still managed to bang my head, other notices visible from the bed might be advisable.
Full breakfast following adequate starters had a seriously undercooked egg, otherwise good. Following breakfast I chose scrambled egg which was good. Because of potential noise on friday night I had a reduced rate and was placed well away from the noise, actually I heard very little. Reception was very good and caring.
