An enjoyable stay.
Me and my father-in-law travelled down to Plymouth to buy a car, so needed a room for an overnight stay prior to making the trip home.
Prices in Plymouth itself are, quite frankly, ridiculous, so I widened the search area and dropped onto The Bell at Broadway. Firstly, it's a proper village pub, always a good thing in my opinion as you're much more likely to find a good atmosphere and some decent beer. The Bell provided both. The staff behind the bar, where we checked in, were friendly and efficient - one of the young ladies walked us to our room which was in an annexed at the back of the pub. We had a twin room - not big, granted, but it was perfectly adequate, and it was clean and nicely presented. Food in the evening was good - we both had cod and chips, which was reasonably priced and went down nicely. We had a full English breakfast the next morning, and it was a cracker. Freshly cooked, not a hint of grease anywhere, and plenty of it - there was also a choice of cereals, fruit juice and as much toast as you wanted. Oh, and proper coffee too - well done on that The Bell, because so many places don't make the effort. We met the landlord for the first time just prior to breakfast - a very friendly and gregarious chap who couldn't do enough for us. We paid £27.50 each for our stay, including breakfast. I refuse to not pick at places like The Bell, especially when the prices are so reasonable. We could have paid well over double that to stay in a clinical, chain hotel in Plymouth, and no doubt many do, but I'd much rather stay at a place like The Bell any day - a local business providing good service and excellent value for money. Take any criticism on here with a pinch of salt, some people just don't 'get' local pubs.
An average stay at an average place
We had two days there.
Host is definitely not on top with managing things but he was ok. Double room was small but not too small. Bed was good but the ends of the sheet was extremely dirty. Some dump in the shower, but acceptable level:). I had to fix the toilet flush button in the middle of the night but we had TV instead. Carpet in the toilet which is not really hygienic. Breakfast met expectations, nothing special.
Excellent place to stay
We only stayed one night but the welcome, the owner and the room was really good, best value for money on our whole trip too.
A bonus was the locals in the pub and the chatty landlord!!
