50% would recommend it to a friend
Stayed here in February, booked and paid for 3 days and left after 2.
It was how one might imagine a hostel for the homeless. There were no facilities including dining facilities and usually no staff. The spiral staircase was dangerous for anyone over 50. To add insult to injury when I received my next credit card bill I had been charged twice for my stay. Once by The George and seemingly once by Eviivo which is, I understand, a central facilitator for accommodation providers. Having booked through LateRooms, I contacted them. They in turn contacted the hotel and Eviivo. They both denied duplicate charging and Eviivo said they had reserved the funds when booked but it’s cancelled when paid at hotel. LateRooms said they do not take money from clients and so it was not their problem. I phoned Eviivo who confirmed what I had been told and said I was probably mistaken in my belief of double charging. In fact I was correct and indeed one of the options when phoning Eviivo is where a client says he has paid twice and so I assume it is not an unusual occurrence. Eventually in speaking to the hotel they admitted that they should have cancelled the second payment but they had not. 3 days later the duplicate payment was credited to my credit card. It was a very wasteful and time consuming experience. My enthusiasm for LateRooms has taken a hit and I say avoid this hotel.
Will never stay again
Hot water does not exist.
Only Luke warm water...if you stay do not use the cold tap, it's not needed. It's freezing at night as the heating gets turned off. You get one thin pillow per person so I had to put towels underneath to prop me up a bit. The only time someone is on reception is check in. We also have a Coca Cola bottle top as the bathroom door stopper. Unfriendly check in and nowhere for breakfast. Said they would recommend however there wasn't anyone to ask, check out is just putting a key in to a post box.
Basic but OK
The George used to be a pub and has been split into two separate concerns.
The room was a twin the beds were too chunky for a small room but everything was clean and the staff was helpful.
A Good Sleep
The room was simple and traditional but the bed was very comfortable, the shower effective and the room warm despite the enormous windows and the freezing night.
No food was available in the Hotel but there are plenty of places to eat close at hand including an Italian restaurant on the ground floor.
Nice large hotel that has its own car park.
Local to several shops and pubs and Battle seems a nice place. Nothing to dislike, unless you have problems climbing stairs!
Old and in Need of TLC
The George Hotel in Battle is old and in need of TLC.
There was no-one on reception when we arrived but we rang a number and someone appeared. The room was adequate but dated and just a bit shabby. That said it was fine for an overnight stay. The bed was comfortable and it was nice and quiet.
A good value basic B (Bed but no breakfast!) in Battle with a host who can't do enough to help and an incredible Italian bizarrely located within the same building on the ground floor.
Rooms not particularly clean (cobwebs and dust, etc.) but suitable on the whole, bathroom consisted of lovely furnishings alongside cafeteria dispensers, and from our bed we had to squint so hard to focus on our 20" TV. Michael the host is excellent and always happy to help with any problems, even if the solutions are rather unorthodox. We can cope with this lack of polish but not suitable for those who expect silver service on a budget. Just a note for the Italian eatery, Simply Italian. Having spent 10 days in Napoli last year, this place is the best pizza I have tasted outside of Italy, hands down.
Simple, clean and comfortable
A good basic hotel, ideal for a night's stay at a very reasonable price.
The room was clean and entirely adequate. The town was very quiet on a Sunday evening. The pubs stop serving food at 9pm, but there's a nice family-run Italian restaurant sharing the ground floor of the George (a separate business). Parking at the back is fine once you get through the narrow access - not as narrow as some I've seen!
Nice old fashioned hotel, a few minor negatives, WiFi code given doesn't work, the toilet wobbles, window has no catch and swings wide open and the shower fixing is cracked and wobbly, very nice bed though and nice furniture, staff are great and extend clock in time if you are running late.
Very outdated - needs modernising.
Parking difficult. You get what you pay for.
