Excellent stay spoilt only by the Reception

Arrived to a queue of people checking in and out.

Abrupt and stressful check in with Roderick the reception manager who without sympathy or charm bamboozled us with a series of conflicting extra expenses and charges to the point we gave up and decided to return later to gain further clarity. He grudgingly took one of our bags and showed us our room which was some way from reception. My 83 year old mother with a sore knee was struggling climbing the stairs and I asked if there was a lift. Told there was no lift as guests are expected to walk as far as possible at all times. By this time we were both feeling more stressed than when we arrived.

However, while our 'welcome' was the worst I have experienced in all the years I have travelled once in the Hotel and Spa area the staff were superb from the restaurant to the treatments- outstanding. Please Champneys do something about your front of house as it is letting down your other staff and their high standards.

Little bit of R & R

Crammed in between two hectic days of work I booked myself in to Champneys for an evening.

What an excellent way to wind down between the two days. Lovely atmosphere, really friendly staff and excellent facilities. I'd definitely stay again.

Champneys Tring

Very friendly and helpful staff, especially Darren and Pauline.

Hiccup with bill, confusion over what was included in B&B rate - suggested we could stay from 5pm until 10am with all use of facilities between those times (!), then go away and come back for 5pm to 10 am, each day. Or pay £55 to stay for the days!. Darren sorted it. Food excellent, classes fun.

Champneys excellence

A first class stay - terrific value for money.

Excellent accommodation in a superb country park setting. If you want to relax and enjoy peace and tranquility in a very comfortable setting near London - then this is for you!

Stay here often.

I'd you are looking for a lively hotel bar, etc this is not the place for you. Hotel is lovely, out of the way. Check in, go to the gym or pool then wander to the local pub for dinner.

A real mixed bag

I booked this because I needed to stay in the area on business, and was intrigued by what Champney's would be like.

Good bits. Staff are great, public areas are swish (and currently being refurbed, so will only get better) and room was well specified, clean and a good size. Bad bits. Well, money needs spent on the less obvious public areas - the stairs/corridors to my room were very tired, with worn out and smelly carpet. Lots of bits of my bathroom were broken - neither the bath nor sink plug would drain water (yes, I do know how they work!) and the shower hose was bust, so sprayed water all over the bathroom. Breakfast is..... interesting. Yes, this is a health spa so you would not expect a cooked breakfast, but the muesli was terrible, like eating gritty powder. Overall this needs some money spending on it to get back up to what was clearly an excellent standard of health spa.

Very Nice

Lovely setting, well out of the way.

If you want some quiet time and are put off that there is no bar. It's great.

Hotel review

This is a spar hotel which promotes health and fitness.

For the money I paid it was pretty spectacular. The facilities are luxurious and there will be far more to the hotel than I looked for. The restaurant area was to the same standard but the menu is limited to low fat, healthy eating. This will be great for some but I found it odd and not very appealing. To be honest £25 for a three course meal is good but not if you leave the table unsatisfied. It's a continental breakfast, which wasn't immediately apparent, but the options where extensive and very good quality. I don't think the staff understood the difference between a full paying spar guest and an over night business customer but the manger was very good and I feel that has been change now.
