Travelling with my family
It’s very nice hotel.
The staff was very friendly and very helpfull, the rooms very clean. Good value for money and would recommend to my friends
Hotel on bus route into Torquay or Newton Abbot plus train station.
I needed to leave at 8.30am to get the train.
A taxi was booked for me the day before and was told I could have my breakfast at 8am even though they didn't start till 8.30am. The lady that cooked the breakfast saw me before hand and was so obliging, I would certainly go back again. Patricia Milligan
Dirty unsanitary room with lots of early morning noise
We were met on arrival and asked to pay for our room, which we later found had not been cleaned properly.
We found an orange morphine tablet on the bathroom floor, not ideal if we'd had young children. The most disgusting thing was left in the toilet someone had emptied their bowels and failed to flush, which the cleaner would have found had they bothered to lift the lid and cleaned. Our daughter was in need of a wee as we'd been travelling 3.5 hours without a break. So she used the toilet and was hit with the most noxious smell , which filled the bathroom and bedroom. Even after flushing there was a residual black 'oil slick' look to the water in the pan, so my husband used the complementary shower gel to do what the cleaning staff had been paid to do. The reception staff were not in evidence for the rest of our stay, we were told on arrival to leave our keys in the basket on the reception desk when we left. The breakfast was of a good standard and the towels and bed linen was clean and fairly new. There was additionally a great deal of door slamming in the early hours of the morning ( before 6 am) as other residents possibly immigrant workers living there were leaving for work in the morning. Thankfully we had booked to stay just one night as we attended a family funeral, this is not somewhere I would return to.
More than a whiff of Fawlty Towers
This Torquay hotel has more than a whiff of Fawlty Towers about it, leaving you with the feeling that you have mildly inconvienenced them by staying there.
On arrival the front door is locked, the expectation being that you will use a bizzare looking phone booth next to the front door to book yourself in. Having arrived after a 200 mile journey, in the dark and pouring rain, I missed this piece of technological wizardry and made the mistake of ringing the doorbell at which point a grumpy owner arrives, begrudgingly books you in whilst reminding you that you were meant to use the phone booth and not disturb him, quite how the front door was going to unlock itself and present you with a room key I hadn't worked out. The hotel's own website states that breakfast is served between 7am and 10.00am, for a business user, the early start was essential and the main reason for booking the hotel, reality is that the breakfast room remains locked and in darkness until 8.01, the coffee is not on and anything that requires cooking is another half an hour away, never saw the owner again all week. Weekend stay with plenty of time on your hands - its OK, business trip - I wouldn't if I were you.
